 Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What qualifies me as a "student" for work purpose?

A: You must be enrolled for 6 or more credits at the The University of Montana Missoula or the College of Technology Campuses. You must also have a Drivers License, Social Security Card and/or a valid Passport. Foreign students have additional requirements that have to be met. If you are a foreign student you must have a Social Security card, an I-20 form, a valid passport, and a letter from the Office of Foreign Student Services.

Q: Can I work in more than one operation?

A: Yes. You can work in multiple operations if necessary to accommodate the schedule and amount of hours you want.

Q: Will my work schedule change all the time?

A: Generally, no. Dining Services makes a schedule for you that is the same for the whole semester, unless special circumstances require a change. You are the owner of that schedule all semester. You can plan study time, trips, social activities, and always know when you will be required to be at work. Schedules may change if a unit's operating hours change.

*Catering is an exception.

Q: What if I need to take off a scheduled day that I work?

A: Dining Services utilizes the "Add a Sub Program". If you need a substitute there is a form you fill out, in advance and post on the sub board. It is your responsibility to find a sub for your shift. Typically a coworker looking for extra hours will "sub" for you. This is the most common way of dealing with time off needs. For special circumstances, the Full-time Unit Manager may make alternative arrangements.

Q: When do I get to eat my free meal?

A: You may eat your earned free meal only after completing your shift of three or more hours. The meal can not be consumed before your scheduled shift.

In addition, the meal must be consumed in the unit you work. Due to guidelines of the State and Federal Government, the meal may not be taken away from the work site or shared with others. No more than two meals per day will be provided when working a split shift of two consecutive hours each.

Q: When are the pay days and pay periods?

A: For those with direct deposit, pay days are on the 1st  working day of every month. For those who wish to pick up their check, pay days are on the 2nd working day of every month. Pay periods run from the 19th of the current month to the 18th of the next month.

Q: What will I need to get hired?

A: You will need a drivers license, Social Security card and / or a valid passport.

If you are a foreign student you must have a Social Security card, an I-20 form, a valid passport, and a letter from the Office of Foreign Student Services.

Q: What is the wage I will make to start?

A: The entry wage for general student staff is currently $6.75 per hour.

Q: If I am hired, is it for the whole year?

A: NO. Students are hired on a semester basis. To continue employment from semester to semester you must reapply to the unit you wish to work in. You must fill out a new application, have your completed class schedule, and be in good standing with your unit.

Most student workers do not find it difficult to continue employment from semester to semester.

Q: Will I have to work during finals week?

A: Yes. Full-time unit managers will work with you to be flexible around your finals schedule. Most students do not find it difficult to work out a satisfactory schedule during finals week.
