MUSE 397, Sec. 1—METHODS: K-8 MUSIC (3:30 – 5:20 pm MTWR, 3 credits)

Required for elementary education majors, this class integrates fundamental skills and basic rudiments of music into the various aspects of teaching music creatively in the elementary school.  Instructor Lori Gray.

MUSI 132L, Sec. 50—HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL (3 credits)

Good rock?  Bad rock?  What’s the difference?  What brands a song a “classic”?  How did Elvis change the landscape of American culture?  Answer these questions and more while you hone your listening skills as a rock-and-roll connoisseur. Instructor Jeffrey Brandt.
 

MUSI 133L, Sec. 50—COUNTRY MUSIC: COWBOYS, NASHVILLE AND OPRY (3 credits)

Ya’ll Come!  Learn about country music from early times on radio, the trials and tribulations of the great country artists, and the star-studded lineup of the 21st century! The course will examine some of the “off shoots” of country music including cowboy songs, bluegrass and rockabilly, as well as the development of country-pop and Nashville. Instructor Amy Smart.

Second Session Offering: June 27–July 29, 2011

 MUSI 416, Sec. 30–WOMEN IN MUSIC (9:30 - 11:20 am MTWR, 3 credits)

Join us as we explore the lives and work of women musicians throughout the world.  Spanning genres and historical periods, from blues, jazz, hip hop and protest music, to classical compositions of the Medieval era and up to the most current cutting edge experiments of our time, woemn have created their voice amidst oftentimes enormous challenges.  Through cross-cultural comparison, the class will make connections between underlying humanitarian themes, gender issues, and the impact of wormen performers and composers.  Class will include live panels with guest artists.  Upper division writing offering, open to all majors, sophomores need consent of instructor.  Instructor Lee Heuermann.

Special Session Offering:  June 27 - June 30, 2011

MUSI 511, Sec. 80—ADVANCED CONDUCTING (8:00 am - 5:00 pm MTWR, 2 credits)

Explore the artistry of conducting in an intensive workshop experience.  Conduct a full laboratory wind ensemble of music teachers, Master of Music in Education students and professional players with close guidance by two nationally known university windband conductors.  Discuss topics related to music education such as repertoire, rehearsal technique, and score study.  Instructor James Smart.
 

Special Session Offering:  July 18 - July 29, 2011

MUSI 191/491, Sec. 80—STUDIO RECORDING WITH PROTOOLS (9:30 am - 3:30 pm MTWRF, 3 credits)

Learn how to record, mix, and master a CD of recording sessions of your band, in digital multi-track, using industry standard equipment, hardware, and Protools and Peak audio software.  Instructor Charles Nichols.
