Helsinki Connection
UM formalizes exchange
with Finnish university
UM recently finalized an exchange agreement with the University of Helsinki, Finland's
oldest and largest university. The agreement allows for the exchange of students and
members of the faculty and staff. Located in Finland's cultural and intellectual
center, the University of Helsinki comprises nine faculties on five campuses and has more
than 33,000 students -- 1,400 of whom are international students from around the world.
Its faculties are theology, law, medicine, arts, science, agriculture and forestry,
education, social sciences and veterinary medicine.
"The University of Helsinki is arguably the best university in northern
Europe," said Mark Lusk, director of international programs at UM.
The institution is officially bilingual -- with courses in Finnish and Swedish -- but
an increasing portion of the curriculum is offered in English. A guide to courses offered
in English is available in UM's Office of International Programs, Room 022 in Main Hall.
UM now has partnerships with 12 foreign universities. To learn more about exchanges,
