Welcome to TGIF News. This e-mail newsletter is provided weekly, except during the summer and scheduled academic breaks, to subscribers that include students, alumni, employees and friends of The University of Montana.

 Easter Eggstravaganza March 22
 

The eighth annual Missoula Easter Eggstravaganza will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 22, on the UM Oval.

The Easter Bunny and UM's mascot, Monte, will make special appearances during the region's largest egg hunt, which includes more than 20,000 prize eggs and 25,000 pieces of candy.

The event is free and open to the public with separate sections for age groups 0-2, 3, 4-5, 6-7 and 8-9 years old. Kids who find maroon, silver and gold eggs will be rewarded with top prizes.

Students who would like to volunteer to help distribute candy and eggs on the Oval for the event should call University Relations at 406-243-2522.

A Bunny Story Hour will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday before the egg hunt at The Bookstore at UM, located in the University Center. It also is free and open to the public.

This year's Eggstravaganza is sponsored by Missoula Federal Credit Union, Community Medical Center, UM's President's Office and University Relations, Pacific Steel, Southgate Mall, The Bookstore at UM, Montana Rail Link, Merrill-Lynch (Roth/Woolhiser Team), US Bank, 102.5 Mountain FM, KPAX-TV, A Carousel for Missoula, Missoula Flagship and Missoula Phoenix.

 Native American Author To Read At UM
 

Janet Campbell Hale will read from her latest novel, "Frog in the Moon," at The University of Montana on Thursday, March 20. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in Gallagher Business Building Room 123.

Hale earned a degree in rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1974. She received a master's degree from the University of California, Davis, where her thesis was the novel "The Jailing of Cecelia Capture." Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1985, it was first runner-up to "Lonesome Dove" for the Western Writers of America Award.

Hale's other books include "Women on the Run," "The Owl's Song" and "Bloodlines: Odyssey of a Native Daughter," a winner of the 1995 American Book Award in creative nonfiction.

 


 Start Training For The GrizzlyMan Race
 

The premiere GrizzlyMan Adventure Race will send racers on an unknown course up Pattee Canyon with a map and compass beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19, on the UM campus.

The GrizzlyMan is the only race of its kind in the Northwest. Racers must find their way to specific checkpoints throughout the 23-mile race by foot or bike on maintained trails and open terrain.

Participants must register before Friday, April 11, at Missoula REI, located on Reserve Street, or online at http://www.active.com. The $40 entry fee includes United States Adventure Racing Association membership, a shirt, products from race sponsors and food following the race. Registration is limited to 300 participants. All those age 16 to 55 are eligible to enter.

 Free Noon-Hour Music At UC
 

Drop by the University Center Atrium at noon to enjoy the sounds of local musicians at two upcoming "Nooners" performances.

David Boone will perform Wednesday, March 19. Boone is a popular local artist from Seeley Lake who has been performing his blend of pop, rock and blues in Missoula and around the Northwest for the past six years.

John Floridis will play on Wednesday, April 2. Floridis has been part of the Missoula music scene since the early 1990s and has toured extensively in the West. He describes his music as "Big Sky of Montana meets the Rust Belt of Cleveland."

Both shows last for one hour. All "Nooners" events are free and open to the public.

 


 Poets Mark Iraq Anniversary
 

More than 30 Montana poets will mark the fifth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq at the Poets for Peace event in Missoula on Wednesday, March 19. The evening of music and poetry readings begins at 7 p.m. at the Wilma Theatre.

Participating writers include Greg Pape, poet laureate of Montana and UM professor; Ed Lahey, 2008 winner of the Governor's Award for lifetime achievement in literature; and Judy Blunt, an award-winning author and UM associate professor. Missoula-based singer-songwriter Amy Martin will kick off the event with her unique brand of peace-oriented music.

Tickets cost $5 and are available at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Montana Military Family Relief Fund. The fund provides monetary grants to families of Montana National Guard and Reserve Component members who are on active duty.

 


 Apply Now To Wilderness Program
 

The Wilderness Institute is currently accepting applications for the 2008-09 Wilderness and Civilization program. Applications are due April 1.

The two-semester, interdisciplinary program integrates classroom learning and field study to explore wildland conservation and the human-nature relationship in Montana. Students take weekly outings to tour local farms and ranches, timber sales, and dams, as well as explore local ecology, natural history, and environmental and land management issues.

The program is offered through the College of Forestry and Conservation in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences. For more information, call 406-243-5361.

 Griz End Season At Idaho State
 

The UM men's basketball team lost 67-65 at Idaho State in the Big Sky Conference Tournament on Saturday night in Pocatello, Idaho.

The Grizzies ended their season in the quarterfinal round, finishing with a 14-16 overall record. Senior Matt Martin came off the bench to lead the Grizzlies in scoring, hitting for 16 points in 17 minutes of work. Martin, who went five-for-nine on 3-pointers, was one of three Grizzlies to score in double figures. Ryan Staudacher scored 14 points and Andrew Strait added 13.

 Lady Griz Win Tournament Host Honors
 

The Lady Griz clinched the outright league title and earned hosting rights to the 2008 Allegiance Life and Health Big Sky Conference Women's Basketball Tournament with a 62-48 victory at Eastern Washington last Thursday in Cheney.

The one notable stat from the game is that Montana scored 27 of its points from the free-throw line, going 27-for-32 (.844).

Montana lost its regular-season finale Saturday afternoon 72-62, at Portland State in Portland, Ore. The Lady Griz closed out their regular season at 23-6, winning the league by a game over Idaho State (20-8, 12-4 BSC) with a 13-3 Big Sky record. The Lady Griz are hosting the six-team tournament through Saturday at Dahlberg Arena in Missoula.

Tournament schedules are on the Lady Griz Web site. Saturday's title game is at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on Altitude Sports.
