Kalm Appointed Dean Of UM College

Stephen Kalm, an award-winning vocalist, opera singer and music professor, has been appointed dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at UM. Kalm had served as interim dean since the retirement of Shirley Howell in May 2008.

"We are very delighted to have Dr. Kalm accept this leadership role," UM Provost Royce Engstrom said. "He has been an exceptional faculty member and did excellent work while serving as interim dean. We are entering an especially exciting time for the arts, with the new status as the College of Visual and Performing Arts and new leadership in the dean's office."

Kalm joined the UM faculty in 1994, serving as chair of the music department from 2002 to 2008. He is an active artist, performing in local, national and international venues.

He holds three degrees in vocal performance: a Bachelor of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, a Master of Arts from Queens College and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the City University of New York.

University Preps For Possible Flu Outbreak

UM actively participates in Missoula's countywide pandemic influenza planning process, which is led by the Missoula City-County Health Department. The value of such planning is now evident with reports of a swine flu outbreak in Mexico and the spread of this outbreak to the United States and other countries.

The University released information this week intended to give people information regarding actions it is taking in response to this outbreak and to provide links to important sources of information, both on the national and local level. The information also provides things people can do to reduce their risk.

It is important to understand that in the early phases of a potential outbreak, information is often incomplete, opening the door for misinterpretation or speculation. Information and advisories can change rapidly.

For up-to-date information, visit the following Web sites. The Missoula City-County Health Department's Hot Line is 406-258-3500.

2009 Grads Donate Bike Rack, Scholarships

UM seniors participating in a student-run fundraising program will leave their mark on campus after they graduate with a new bike rack for the Native American Center and with scholarships for incoming freshmen in the fall.

As part of the Senior Challenge, 182 seniors donated more than $3,200 to the University this semester. Nearly twice as many students participated in this year's challenge than in last year's. The program is led by students and is overseen by the UM Foundation.

The funds will be used to purchase the Class of 2009's senior gift to campus -- a shiny new bike rack valued at about $650 that will be installed at the new Native American Center, currently under construction and scheduled for completion next fall. The remainder of the funds will go toward student scholarships.

Two Griz Players Sign With NFL Teams

Two Grizzly football standouts signed with National Football League teams after the NFL draft on Saturday, April 25.

Montana's Colt Anderson, the 194-pound safety out of Butte, signed a three-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings, while Colin Dow, a 305-pound guard from Billings, got a two-year deal from Cincinnati.

Both players were on the phone with several teams during the seventh round of the draft. In the end, Weber State linebacker J.D. Folsom was the only Big Sky Conference player drafted. He went to Miami as the 214th overall pick.

Two Montana Runners Qualify For NCAAs

The Grizzlies doubled their NCAA regional numbers from two to four on April 24. Junior Kara DeWalt qualified in the steeplechase and sophomore Katrina Drennen qualified in the 5,000 meters at the Oregon Relays in Eugene, Ore. The rest of the team competed at the Duane Hartman Invitational on Saturday, April 25, in Spokane, Wash. UM had five new Big Sky Conference qualifications and five individual event winners at the meet. Adding new Big Sky qualifications from the women's team were Brooke Andrus and freshman Jessica Leslie. Andrus became Montana's first 800-meter qualifier when she won the event in a career-best time of 2:16.48. Her time met the Big Sky standard of 2:17.50. Leslie became the Grizzlies' first qualifier in the long jump, men's or women's, when she won the event with a distance of 18-3, meeting the Big Sky standard of 18-2.

Adding qualifications for the men were seniors Dan Bingham and Eli Hermann. Bingham ran the steeplechase in 9:26.94 to place second. Hermann, who was already qualified in the event, ran a season-best 9:30.07 to place third in the steeplechase. Bingham and Hermann both added 10,000-meter qualifications with their steeplechase times.

With two weekends before the 2009 Big Sky Conference outdoor championships, the Grizzlies have 19 women with 31 automatic qualifications in 16 different events and 18 men with 24 automatic qualifications in 13 different events.
