Professor Wins Prestigious National Writing Award
A book by UM-Missoula Professor Stewart Justman has been awarded one of the writing world's highest honors: the 2004 PEN Award for the Art of the Essay. Justman is a liberal studies faculty member who has taught introductory English composition at UM for three decades. He was rewarded for his "Seeds of Mortality: The Public and Private Worlds of Cancer," which was published in 2003. The PEN Award is presented each year to the best collection of essays by an American writer.

UM Offers Unique Entertainment Program
An innovative new program at UM-Missoula may lead students from the Rocky Mountains to the Hollywood Hills. On May 1 six students became the first to receive certification from the Media and Entertainment Management Program, the latest offering from the University's School of Business Administration. Students take classes in venue management, artist management, new media, and touring and promotion. Offerings may lead to careers as agents, tour managers, concert promoters, film producers and more.

Schedule Announced For Commencement Ceremonies
Following finals week May 10-14, this year's graduates will don caps and gowns Saturday, May 15, for Commencement ceremonies in the Adams Center. The professional schools will observe a 9:30 a.m. ceremony, while the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Technology begin theirs at 2 p.m. Degree candidates meet an hour earlier at the Oval, with processionals beginning promptly at 9:10 a.m. and 1:40 p.m., respectively. In case of rain, processionals will depart from the Adams Center south annex gyms. Individual school ceremonies follow the main ceremonies. Fulbright Offers International Opportunities
Are you looking for an opportunity to study, conduct research or teach in another country? UM students, alumni and other young professionals can apply now for the 2005-06 Fulbright U.S. Student Program competition to earn full or partial grants to pursue international opportunities. Fulbright student grants aim to increase mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange while serving as a catalyst for long-term leadership development. news release

Community Invited To Very Special Event
Join Gov. Judy Martz, Montana Grizzlies head football coach Bobby Hauck and honorary chair Phyllis Washington Wednesday, May 19, at opening ceremonies for the Special Olympics Montana 2004 State Summer Games. This event begins at 7 p.m. in Dahlberg Arena, where 1,000 athletes from across Montana will gather for a Parade of Athletes. The games continue Thursday and Friday, May 20-21, with athletic competitions at locations throughout Missoula. Events include golf, softball, gymnastics, soccer and more. Volunteers still are needed for the Olympic Village, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 19-20 in the East Auxiliary Gym. To volunteer, contact Jessica Wilcomb, (406) 243-2488.

UM Selects Outstanding Business School Alumni
The School of Business Administration at UM-Missoula has selected its 2004 outstanding alumni award winners. The three winners were chosen by the school's Business Advisory Council. Sharon Vega of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Jon Marchi of Polson; and Eric Sprunk of Beaverton, Ore., will receive their awards tonight in Missoula during the 57th Annual Donor Recognition and Scholarship Awards Banquet, which will be held at 7 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom.

Mansfield Library Receives Recognition
Promotion of the Missoula Reads Initiative, a community-wide effort to celebrate the joys of reading and literacy, has earned three Missoula organizations the 2004 Montana Library Association Media Award. The winners were the Missoula Public Library, the St. Patrick Hospital-based Institute for Medicine and Humanities, and the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library at UM. Separately, the Mansfield Library also recently made the Collection Management Honor Roll of the Montana State Library Commission.

Campus Compact Names Scholarship Winners
The Montana Campus Compact, a statewide higher education organization that supports campus-based public service, has announced its 2004 MTCC Community Service Scholarship recipients. Each winner will receive a certificate and $500 award. Winners are Sarah Weems Pallis, a mathematics faculty member at Carroll College in Helena; Dixie Linnell, an elementary education faculty member at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell; and Tara Keller, a UM-Missoula graduate and Habitat for Humanity volunteer.

UM Tennis Finishes Season
The men's tennis team dropped two of three doubles contests and three singles matches in a 4-0 loss to No. 4-seed Northern Arizona in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Conference Championships last week in Ogden, Utah. With the win, Northern Arizona advances to the conference semifinals, where they will face top-seed Montana State. The UM men end their season with a 7-11 overall record. The women's tennis team fell 4-2 to No. 2-seed Northern Arizona in last Friday's Big Sky Conference Championships semifinals. The Lumberjacks took two of three doubles matches and three singles contests from the Lady Griz. Montana ends the 2004 tennis season with a 3-14 overall mark.

Griz Track Home For Tom Gage Classic
Montana's men's track and field team defeated rival Montana State, but the Grizzly women fell to the Bobcats during the schools' annual dual, held this year at Bozeman last Saturday. For the third consecutive time, the Grizzly men beat MSU, winning with a score of 105-94. Montana's women came up short, though -- 105-98 -- losing for the eighth straight year to the Bobcats. Montana hosts the Tom Gage Classic today at Dornblaser Field in Missoula. It will be the final meet for the Grizzlies before the Big Sky Conference Championships, which get under way May 12 in Ogden, Utah.
