UM Bestows Two With Highest Honor
UM will award honorary doctorate degrees to Caleb
Shields and Phyllis J. (Peterson) Washington during
2009 Commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 16,
at the Adams Center.
Shields, an enrolled Sioux and respected leader from
the Fort Peck Reservation, will receive an Honorary
Doctor of Humane Letters during the 9:30 a.m.
ceremony for the College of Arts and Sciences and the
College of Technology.
Phyllis J. Washington, a 1964 alumna of UM's School
of Education, will receive an Honorary Doctor of
Education during the 2 p.m. ceremony for the
professional schools of business administration, fine

Professions and Biomedical Sciences.
UM President George Dennison said Shields and
Washington are Montanans with the standing and
stature to provide excellent role models for new
graduates.
"Not only can we present to the graduates examples
of our high expectations of them," Dennison said, "we
also have the opportunity to recognize outstanding
service to the people of Montana as we honor these
two excellent candidates with the highest award an
academic institution can bestow."

Students Produce Videos For Dining Services
UM Dining Services has announced the winners of its
first annual Green Spot Competition. Open to all UM
students, the competition raises awareness of the
many UDS green initiatives by encouraging students
to create a 30-second video commercial or "spot"
using live-action, animation or all-graphic production.
Jesse Spaulding won first prize, a $500 scholarship,
for his entry titled "Pulper." The subject of his spot was
the Hobart WastePro Pulper, located in UM's Food
Zoo dish room. This machine mixes post-consumer
waste materials with water, grinds it to a fine pulp and
then extracts the water, reducing waste volume by up
to 80 percent.
Derek Kanwischer took home the second prize, a
Sony Camcorder, with his entry, "UM Think Tank."
Kanwischer's entry tells the story of the Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design-certified
construction of the new home for The Think Tank
Project.
Watch the winning videos on the University Dining
Services Web site.

Grizzlies Host Championships This Weekend
Montana sophomore Courtney Kosovich qualified for
the NCAA Midwest Regional Meet at the Tom
Gage Classic in Bozeman on May 8, when the pole
vaulter matched a career best with a vault of 12-7.5.
Kosovich's performance highlighted Montana's efforts
at the meet, which saw sleet, snow and heavy winds
during the final 90 minutes. The poor weather
canceled the men's pole vault.
Senior Eli Hermann qualified for his first NCAA
Midwest Regional Meet when he ran 9:05.41 in the
steeplechase at the Oregon Twilight Meet on May 9 at
Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Hermann and Kosovich will join juniors Kara DeWalt
and Chris Hellekson and sophomores Katrina
Drennen, Richard Brumbaugh and Cole Beyer at the
regional meet in Norman, Okla., May 29-30.
Montana finished its regular season with 23 men and
23 women automatically qualified for the Big Sky
Championships, which began Wednesday and run
through Saturday, May 16, at Dornblaser Field.
