 Think Green This Holiday Season

The holidays are a better time than ever to evaluate consumer habits and personal eco-footprints, according to Jessie Davie, Associated Students of UM sustainability coordinator. She offers the following tips for a sustainable holiday season:

  • Buy less by organizing a drawing for gifts. Buying things just for the sake of giving them is doing a disservice to your pocketbook, your friends and the environment.
  • Consider concert or movie tickets or certificates for massages or restaurant meals. Every gift doesn't have to come wrapped in plastic or packed in cardboard or Styrofoam.
  • Patronize local shops to find gifts that are more unique and made from materials available locally. Don't forget to bring reusable shopping bags.
  • Think outside the box when wrapping your gifts this season. Wrap them in cloth or old newspapers instead.
  • Use LED lights for your holiday tree. They use 80 percent less energy than the strings that burn out after only a few seasons, and when one bulb burns out, the rest of the lights will stay lit.

Here's Davie's final tip: Hum the three R carol -- "Reduce, Recycle, Reuse" -- as much this season as you do "Jingle Bells."

 Fulbright Program Benefits UM Students

From 1993 to this year, 40 UM students have had the opportunity to study abroad as Fulbright Scholars.

Each year, with the support of UM's Fulbright Program adviser, Professor Elizabeth Ametsbichler, students are encouraged to apply for program grants. The grants generally provide funding for round-trip travel, maintenance for one academic year, health and accident coverage, and full or partial tuition.

Ametsbichler's work with the Fulbright Program was recently commended by Allan Goodman, president and CEO of the nonprofit Institute of International Education. IIE manages the Fulbright Program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

"Over the years, we have received many awards," Ametsbichler said. "The University has three students studying abroad as Fulbright Scholars this year."

Ametsbichler said she would like to see even more UM students apply for the award. E-mail Liz Ametsbichler for more information.

Information about the program requirements and application process are online.

 Foundation Opens Scholarship Competition

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is accepting nominations for its Graduate Scholarship Program -- one of the largest and most competitive in the country.

UM selects two seniors or alumni who have graduated from the University since spring 2003 as candidates for the scholarships, which can total $300,000 -- as much as $50,000 per year for up to six years.

The scholarships will be awarded in early summer 2008 for use during the 2008-09 academic year. Each award will be renewed by the foundation in subsequent years based on student performance.

Potential UM applicants should review the requirements on the foundation Web site and then contact Laure Pengelly Drake, director of external scholarships at the Davidson Honors College, who coordinates the UM application process. She can be reached at 406-243-6140.

The UM deadline for applications is Thursday, Jan. 31.
