'We Are Montana' Tour Continues in Hi-Line Towns

UM President Royce Engstrom will travel to the Montana Hi-Line as part of the "We are Montana" tour of the state. Engstrom and other senior UM leaders will travel to six towns Monday through Wednesday, Dec. 9-11, to meet with and listen to educators, alumni, students, legislators and community members. 

 

The fourth leg of the tour travels to Heart Butte first, then to Browning and Cut Bank and concludes in Box Elder and Havre. Tour members also will visit Great Falls high schools on the return trip to Missoula.

Holiday Party, Cookie Cook-Off scheduled

The UM faculty and staff Holiday Party and the annual Christmas Cookie Cook-Off will be held this week.


The Holiday Party, hosted by the Office of the President, will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, in the University Center Ballroom. The party is open to faculty and staff over 21 years of age.


The UM Dining Christmas Cookie Cook-Off will be from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Food Zoo on Friday, Dec. 13. UM students, employees and their families are invited to spread holiday cheer by baking and decorating cookies. A valid Griz Card is required.

UM Caroling Ensemble to Perform Around Town

The UM Caroling Ensemble, which includes faculty and staff members, will perform holiday songs around campus and Missoula throughout the week. The schedule is:

  • Monday, Dec. 9: University Center Atrium, 12:15-12:45 p.m., free and open to the public.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 10: St. Patrick Hospital cafeteria, noon-12:30 p.m., free and open to the public.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 11: Clark Fork Riverside Retirement Home, 5-5:30 p.m., open to residents.
  • Friday, Dec. 13: New Directions Christmas Party, Skaggs Building first floor lobby, noon-12:30 p.m., open to guests of New Directions.

Bob Ward & Sons Sporting Goods store in Missoula invites UM educators to their fourth annual Educator Appreciation Night from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11.

 

Educators will receive 25 percent off everyday pricing in athletics, camping, hunting, fishing, clothing, footwear and ski gear. The discount is good for in-store purchases only and excludes guns, ammunition, paddle sport gear, high-end optics and some clearance items.

Assistant Director of Marketing and Recruitment Karissa Drye recently was awarded the 2013 NODA Leadership Award in San Antonio, Texas. NODA is the Association for Orientation, Transition and Retention in Higher Education. The NODA Leadership award is given annually to one association member who exemplifies true leadership in the national arena of orientation, student transition and retention. "This national award acknowledges what UM already knows about Karissa. She is an exemplary leader in her field nationally, and our orientation programs are world-class under her guidance and hard work," said Jed Liston, assistant vice president for Enrollment Services.  

 

UM Foundation Executive Vice President of Finance and Operations Keith Kuhn will retire at the end of February. He has worked with the Foundation for eight years, and CEO Shane Giese says Kuhn's leadership has been instrumental to the Foundation's success.

 

Curry Health Center Student Wellness Director Linda Green recently received a Going the Extra Mile Award for her support of the Missoula Designated Driver Program. The award is given by the Missoula and Ravalli County Buckle Up Montana Coalitions and DUI Task Forces, and the Ravalli County Prevention Coalition. Twenty-five awards are given to recognize community members for their contribution to reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities in Missoula, Mineral and Ravalli counties.

 

Ten UM Rural Institute Consumer Advisory Council members from Big Sandy, Columbia Falls, Helena, Polson, Missoula and Miles City traveled to Billings in November for the 2013 Montana Youth in Transition conference. The young adults from the CAC presented three workshops -- "Living on Your Own," "Let's Talk about Money!" and "The Missing Therapy -- Mental Health" -- which were co-presented with MonTECH staff at an assistive technology session. They also hosted information tables at the youth and adult vendor fairs, and recruited emerging leaders to share their stories of inclusive employment, education, housing and/or recreation with other Montanans. Rural Institute staff members Ellen Condon and Kim Brown provided planning and logistical support.
