Briefs Centers of Discovery-The first of a series of information kiosks geared toward Montana travelers debuted this summer at Southgate Mall. "The Lewis & Clark Information Kiosk: The Journey Through Montana" was developed by the UM Information Technology Office with Federal Highway Administration funding from the Montana Department of Transportation. The kiosks provide educational and tourism-related information about the state's Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. UM's ITO incorporated the latest technology into the kiosks, which feature touch-screen interactivity, a high-definition plasma video screen and more. A special first exhibit, "Discovering the Rivers of Lewis and Clark," runs through Sept. 22 at the kiosk, which is located near Victoria's Secret. More kiosks will be installed at the Missoula airport and other locations around the state. Annual Address-The public is invited to learn more about Missoula's premier public institution during President George Dennison's annual State of the University Address on Tuesday, Sept. 2. The event kicks off with refreshments at 2:30 p.m. in the Radio/Television Center Foyer, and Dennison will speak at 3 p.m. in the adjacent Montana Theatre. Ice Cream Welcome-The second annual ice cream social to welcome UM students back to Missoula neighborhoods will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, in the 400 block of University Avenue. The event celebrates the diversity UM students bring to the Missoula community. The organizers' goal is to provide a casual setting for students and other residents to become acquainted. The street party will include free ice cream from Baskin-Robbins and Big Dipper, live music, entertainment for children and brief introductions of special guests. Information about community and University programs also will be available. Shuttle buses from UM's Transportation Services will provide rides from the University Village and the event location. While guests will not be charged for ice cream at the social, there are costs involved in presenting the event. Donors can call Jane Bucks at (406) 728-2461 or contribute during the event. Essay Expert-A UM law student recently won the Roscoe Pound Institute's Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest. John Heenan, a May graduate of the law school, won the $5,000 cash award for his essay titled "Graceful Maneuvering: Corporate Avoidance of Liability Through Bankruptcy and Corporate Law." The essay, a study of Libby and W.R. Grace's use of bankruptcy proceedings to avoid liability, was written as an independent study and fulfilled his legal writing requirement. The essay will be published in "Res Communes," the Vermont online Journal of the Environment. Heenan will begin a two-year clerkship for Federal District Court Judge Richard Cebull in Billings next month. International
Friendship-Volunteers are being sought for the Missoula International
Friendship Program, which matches Missoula families with international
students studying at UM. These "community friends" invite
the students to share outings, meals, holidays and more , with everyone
learning about one another's culture in the process. Most community
friends get together with their student about once a month, and UM
President George Dennison hosts a reception for volunteers in the
fall. Volunteers for the next academic year are being sought until
Aug. 25. For information, call (406) 549-1491, (406) 243-5580 or (406)
243-2896. |
