ROTC honors
'Col. Sam'

The University's ROTC Grizzly Batallion marked its 80th anniversary on campus during Homecoming weekend by dedicating a wall to one of its most successful alums.

The distinguished career of Retired Air Force Col. Sam Roberts is commemorated in the Hall of Honor on the second floor of the Schreiber Gymnasium, where ROTC is headquartered. Roberts lettered in Grizzly football and was named outstanding ROTC cadet while at UM in the late 1930s.

He started his military career flying combat missions aboard his B-29 bomber, the "Grym Gryphon," in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Roberts retired in 1970, after serving in Vietnam as deputy assistant chief of staff. He and his wife, Kathleen, live in Missoula and are loyal UM supporters.
