Meet Joe Glenn,
Griz gridiron coach
Just when Grizzly football fanatics were fretting that life as they knew
it was over, in walks a charismatic coach from Colorado to lift spirits. Such was the
case on campus earlier this month when UM football head coach Mick Dennehy announced that
he had accepted the head coaching position at Division I-A Utah State and was taking most
of his assistant coaches with him. The UM football team and the community were
shell-shocked by the unexpected news.
Within days of Dennehy's surprise announcement, Joe Glenn led football players and
friends in a spirited version of UM's fight song, "Up With Montana," during a
press conference to announce his hiring as Grizzly football head coach. Glenn, head coach
at the University of Northern Colorado for the past 10 years, is no stranger to Grizzly
football. He was an assistant with the Griz under Larry Donovan in 1980-85. Now he returns
to a new football stadium and a team that has a winning tradition.
At Northern Colorado Glenn never had a losing season, racking up an overall 98-35
record. He coached the UNC Bears to the Division II playoffs seven times and to the
national championship title in 1996 and 1997. Glenn's other coaching experience includes
stints at South Dakota, Doane College in Nebraska and Northern Arizona.
