Experts On North Korea To Present Program

Three top experts on North Korea will present "Fallout Southeast Asia: Consequences of the Global Economic Crisis and Nuclear Stalemate on the Korean Peninsula" at UM on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

The program will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. in the University Center Theater and is free and open to the public.

Presenters are:
  • Thomas Byrne, vice president/senior credit officer, Moody's Financial Institutions & Sovereign Risk Group.
  • Gordon Flake, executive director, the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation.
  • Nicole Finnemann, director of research and academic affairs, Korea Economic Institute.

Terry Weidner, director of UM's Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center, said this program is particularly timely because rumors persist that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il has suffered a serious stroke and U.S. policy toward the country is likely to change.

The program is funded by the Korea Economic Institute in Washington, D.C., and co-sponsored by the Mansfield Center, the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation and the World Affairs Council of Montana.

Events At UM Affect Parking Availability

It's spring, and several events will be held at UM that will make it more difficult to find parking spaces on campus. Faculty and staff are encouraged to use public transportation such as Mountain Line buses or Park-N-Ride options during these times.

Two events are happening this week that will lead to fewer available parking spaces:
  • Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 23-24: A band festival will be held at the Music Building. The event not only brings more cars to campus, but also the buses to load and unload festival participants.
  • Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 25-26: The Big Sky Career Fair will take place at the University Center. The third level of the UM parking garage will be closed both days except to vendors for the fair.

Jennifer Lince of UM's Office of Public Safety is available to help faculty and staff who are coordinating events on campus with arranging parking and transportation. She can be reached at 243-6131 or by e-mail at jennifer.lince@mso.umt.edu.

 'Campus Climate Exchange' A Success

More than 1,100 students from various disciplines participated in "Campus Climate Exchange" discussions led by UM faculty members Feb. 18-19.

"Campus Climate Exchange" is an educational initiative designed to raise awareness about the breadth of climate change and its many dimensions. The initiative builds on last year's inaugural "Focus the Nation" climate change awareness project.

Several UM faculty members participated in this year's "Campus Climate Exchange," which was a joint effort organized by the Environmental Studies Program and the ASUM Sustainability Center.

"The hope is that the initiative will encourage more classroom discussion about climate change within various academic fields at UM," said Jessie Davie, ASUM sustainability coordinator.
