 Professor Awarded Guggenheim Fellowship
 

UM wildlife biology Professor L. Scott Mills has been named a 2009 Guggenheim Fellow by the board of trustees of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Fellows are appointed annually by the foundation on the basis of impressive achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment. The 180 winners this year were chosen from 3,000 applicants from all areas of the sciences, arts and scholarship.

Mills is the only recipient this year from Montana. He joins the ranks of two other recent UM Guggenheim Fellowship recipients: Associate Professor Judy Blunt in 2006 and Professor Debra Magpie Earling in 2007.

 Overstock.com CEO To Speak At UM
 

Patrick Michael Byrne, chair and CEO of Overstock.com, will present the spring 2009 Harold and Priscilla Gilkey Executive Lecture at UM on Thursday, April 30.

Byrne will talk about "Mental Models and Social Entrepreneurship" at 6 p.m. in Gallagher Business Building Room 106. The event is free and open to the public.

In 1999, Byrne founded Overstock.com Inc., an Internet retailer that reported revenues of $834 million in 2008. In 2001, he launched Worldstock.com -- Overstock.com's socially responsible store for products handcrafted by artisans from developing nations and rural areas of the United States. To date, more than $30 million has been returned to Worldstock's artisan suppliers.

 


 Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival April 24-25
 

Legendary jazz musician Buddy DeFranco will return to UM for the Department of Music's 29th annual jazz festival Friday and Saturday, April 24-25. For the last nine years, the event has been called the Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival to honor the celebrated jazz clarinetist.

Each year DeFranco comes to Missoula to collaborate with the UM jazz program and world-class jazz artists at the two-day festival. This year's featured artists are Benny Golson on tenor saxophone, Dave Samuels on vibes and marimba, drummer Steve Smith and trumpet player Randy Sandke. All festival events will take place in the University Theatre.

Clinics will be held each day at 1 p.m. Samuels and Sandke will perform in concert with DeFranco at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and Golson and Smith will take the stage with DeFranco at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The clinics are free and open to the public. Tickets for evening concerts are $22 for the general public and $17 for students and seniors. A special two-night price of $40 for the general public and $30 for students and seniors also is available.

 Central, Southwest Asia Conference This Week
 

UM will host the Seventh Annual Central and Southwest Asia Conference at UM from Wednesday to Friday, April 22-24.

The theme of this year's conference, which is free and open to the public, is "Beyond the Headlines: Peace and Conflict in Central and Southwest Asia."

The conference will bring internationally renowned scholars, diplomats, analysts and journalists to UM to engage the campus and the community in a discussion about the challenges the countries in Central and Southwest Asia are facing and how those challenges impact the United States.

 Thesis Exhibitions At UM Gallery
 

The Gallery of Visual Arts and the UM Department of Art will present master's thesis work by Eva Champagne, Lisa Jarrett and Christina Murdoch Mills during April and May. The exhibitions will be on display April 21-May 15 at the Gallery of Visual Arts, located on the first floor of UM's Social Science Building.

An opening reception will be held at the gallery from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 23. Mills will give a thesis presentation, "Materiality as the Basis for the Aesthetic Experience in Contemporary Art," at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in Social Science Building Room 356.

All events are free and open to the public and there is no charge for admission to the gallery. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursdays.  A Day To Appreciate UM Staff
 

UM will celebrate its 13th annual Staff Appreciation Day -- "Fandango Fiesta" -- from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, in the University Center Ballroom.

All UM staff members, administrators, deans, chairs, directors and executive officers are encouraged to attend the event, which includes a continental breakfast, fun and prizes to thank UM staff members for their service to the University.

 


 Musical Chairs Competition Open To All
 

UM will attempt to set a record for the largest game of musical chairs in Montana history on Tuesday, April 21, on the Oval. The competition is open to all.

The game is on at 12:15 p.m. around the Grizzly Bear statue, where competitors will battle for the last remaining chair to the sounds of funk-jazz trio Soulive. The last contestant sitting will earn a cash prize of $200.

The event is sponsored by UM's Entertainment Management program, which offers a certificate to students who learn the business side of the entertainment industry. The program will bring Soulive to campus May 8 during the annual Spring Thaw event.

 Earth Week Events Include Barbecue, Fair
 

The University community is invited to a Farm to College barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 24, at the UM FLAT, located at 633 S. Fifth St. E.

The event is part of the University's Earth Week celebration and will feature live music, free food and the opportunity to tour UM's new eco-house.

Gov. Brian Schweitzer will attend UM's Sustainability Fair, to be held from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in the UC North Atrium. A complete schedule of Earth Week events is on the Greening UM Web site.

 Time To Think About CHOICES
 

Materials and instructions for online enrollment in MUS insurance program benefits through CHOICES will arrive in campus mailboxes April 20-24. The first day of online open enrollment is Monday, May 4. The last day to enroll online is Friday, May 29. Human Resource Services must receive signature pages by Friday, June 5.

Paul Bogumill, director of benefits at the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education, will provide details on the current status of the MUS plan and benefit changes effective July 1, 2009, at meetings on Wednesday, April 29, in the UC Theater:
  • 8:30-10 a.m.: Retiree Session
  • 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Active Session
  • 1-2:30 p.m.: Active Session


The HRS Benefits Fair will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at the University Center, third-floor foyer. The fair offers a chance to talk to representatives from insurance providers and get information about the employee assistance program, the flex plan, retirement plan options and more.

HRS also will offer presentations in the UC Theater that provide a chance to ask questions about changes to benefits effective July 1, 2009:
  • 1-2:30 p.m. Monday, May 11
  • 4-5:30 p.m. Monday, May 18
  • 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 19

News About U Anthropology and Native American studies Professor Neyooxet Greymorning delivered a keynote address -- "Creating a Model for Language Proficiency" -- at the Taking Action for Indigenous Languages conference March 21 at Lethbridge University in Canada. On April 6, Greymorning delivered a keynote address -- "The Intersection of Language and Culture" -- for the American Indian Symposium at Weber State University in Utah. He also was a panel discussant for the Graduate and Faculty Research Conference held at UM on April 11.

Sociology Professor Teresa Sobieszczyk will present an invited paper -- "Being and Becoming Up-to-Date: International Labor Migration and Identity Change for Young Northern Thai Women" -- at a workshop on "Migration and Identities in Asia" next month in Seoul, South Korea.
