 UM Among Princeton Review's Best

UM once again is listed among the top four-year colleges and universities in North America by the Princeton Review.

The 2010 edition, "The Best 371 Colleges," was released last month. The rankings are based on surveys of more than 122,000 undergraduate students. The 80-question survey asks students to rate their school on several topics and report their campus experiences. Top schools, including UM, received a two-page profile with student comments.

"We are especially gratified that this ranking results from our student body," said UM President George Dennison. "This recognizes the dedication of our faculty and staff to provide an outstanding educational experience at The University of Montana."

The school profiles also include ratings based on data collected by the Princeton Review during the 2008-09 academic year. On a scale of 60 to 99, UM received an 83 for "Quality of Life." In 2008 the Princeton Review introduced the "Green" category as a measure of a school's commitment to environmental policies, practices and education. In the 2010 edition, UM received a rating of 96 in the "Green" category.

Only about 15 percent of the nation's four-year colleges and two Canadian colleges made "The Best 371 Colleges" list. Complete listings are on the Princeton Review Web site.

 Dining Services Takes National Awards

University Dining Services recently cooked up two major awards at the annual National Association of College and University Food Services conference.

UM's Casa Nina was awarded the Loyal E. Horton Grand Prize last month at the NACUFS conference in Milwaukee. The prize was given in the category of retail sales -- single stand-alone concept outlet. The authentic Mexican restaurant was eligible for the grand prize after being selected in May as the Loyal E. Horton Gold Award winner among large schools in the category.

The Loyal E. Horton Grand Prize is the ultimate professional tribute in college and university culinary arts. Named for an association founder and past president, the award salutes the most successful ideas in menus, presentations, special event planning and new dining concepts.

Casa Nina, located in the University Center Food Court, also received the People's Choice Award, determined by conference attendees' votes for 55 schools that were gold, silver or bronze winners in their division.

 Film Chronicles Pulitzer Prize Photographs

The award-winning documentary film "Moment of Impact: Stories of the Pulitzer Prize Photographs" will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, in the University Center Theater.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is held in conjunction with "Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs," currently at the Montana Museum of Art & Culture and the Gallery of Visual Arts at UM. "Capture the Moment" is the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs ever shown in the United States. It features 143 color and black-and-white photographs of some of the world's most iconic images.

Other special events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition, including a presentation at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, by Michel duCille, two-time Pulitzer winner and assistant managing editor for photography at The Washington Post. DuCille will present "Modern Media: A Photojournalist's Vision for the Future" as part of the President's Lecture Series at UM. The presentation will be held in the Montana Theatre, located in the Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center.

Gallery hours and more information about "Capture the Moment" and events held in conjunction with the exhibition are on the MMAC Web site.

 Volunteers Needed For Welcomefest
Deadline To Volunteer: Wednesday, Aug. 19

A crew of more than 100 UM volunteers will help students get settled in residence halls at Welcomefest events Tuesday, Aug. 25, and Saturday, Aug. 29. The annual events bring UM administrators, faculty members, staff and students together as a community to greet new and returning students and their families.

From noon to 8 p.m. both days volunteers will direct parking, provide information and be available to help students during the move-in process. For giving one hour or more of time, volunteers receive a Welcomefest T-shirt and a free meal at the Food Zoo.

For more information or to volunteer, call Enrollment Services at 243-6266.

Registration Open: World's Largest Garage Sale

 Help Welcome International Students

The Missoula International Friendship Program is seeking volunteer families, couples and single people to become Community Friends to international students who will begin studies at UM this fall.

To complement their campus experience, MIFP provides a structured opportunity for students to meet local residents and share leisure and family activities once a month or so for one or two semesters. Hosts are not expected to become legal guardians or financial sponsors, and students do not reside in hosts' homes.

Application forms to become a host for an international student must be completed by Tuesday, Aug. 25. For more information, call UM Foreign Student and Scholar Services at 243-2226.
