President Outlines UM Priorities In Address

President Dennison welcomed the campus community to a new academic year during his annual State of University address Friday, Aug. 22, in the Montana Theatre.

Dennison began by introducing several new or promoted members of UM's administrative team. Among the many mentioned was Perry Brown, who will serve a two-year appointment as interim associate provost for graduate education; Christopher Comer, who begins duties as dean of UM's College of Arts and Sciences in January 2009; and Stephen Kalm, who will serve as interim dean of the School of Fine Arts during the University's national search to replace Shirley Howell, who retired last spring.

The president then spoke in detail about UM's priorities for the coming year. Central to those priorities is student success: delivering quality courses and programs through mediums appropriate to identified needs; fully implementing transfer policies adopted by the state Board of Regents; and putting into action the Plan for Student Success, which includes advising, retention and recruitment programs designed to assure a successful initial year for entering freshmen and address the needs of sophomores and upper division students.

Other priorities include communicating with Gov. Brian Schweitzer's administration and Montana's state legislators as they prepare to convene in January for the 2009 legislative session and educating the public about the Six-Mill Levy that will appear on the November ballot.

UM also will prepare for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities accreditation visit scheduled for spring 2010, move forward with the establishment of the Hamilton Higher Education Center, complete the redesign of the University's home pages, work to increase the number of science and math teachers in Montana, and expand the Campus Sustainability Program to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in alignment with Gov. Brian Schweitzer's 20X10 Initiative.

 Scholarship Applications Due Soon

Laure Pengelly Drake, director of external scholarships and advising at the Davidson Honors College, reminds faculty and staff that many external scholarships, such as the Rhodes, Marshall and Mitchell, have September and early October deadlines and require a great deal of institutional support.

Nominations for the scholarship should be sent to Pengelly Drake at Davidson Honors College Room 102. More information is on the Davidson Honors College Web site.

Pengelly Drake also encourages department chairs and staff to consider adding the link for DHC coordinated scholarships to any information that goes out to students to be sure they are updated about opportunities available for them.

If you have questions, call 243-6140 or e-mail laure.pengellydrake@umontana.edu.
