 Documentary Premieres At UM

The premiere of the documentary film "Jailed for Their Words: When Free Speech Died in Wartime America" will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30, at UM.

The event starts at 7:30 p.m. in the University Center Theater. It is sponsored by the UM School of Journalism and Fact & Fiction and is free and open to the public.

The one-hour film by West of Kin Productions and the School of Journalism is based on UM Professor Clem Work's book "Darkest Before Dawn." It is directed by Gita Saedi Kiely.

A question-and-answer session with filmmakers will be held after the premiere. For more information, call 243-2160 or 243-2237.

Event Celebrates Life Of David Friend

Diane Friend and the UM's Department of Physics and Astronomy invite Missoula and campus community members to join them for a Star Party from 8 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, on the UM Oval to celebrate the life of David Friend.

Telescopes will be set up for people to view Jupiter, nebulae, star clusters and, if the night is clear, the distant galaxies that David Friend so loved to discuss with his students and colleagues.

Friend taught courses in astronomy, astrophysics and physics at UM. He received the University's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2005 and served as chair of the physics and astronomy department from 2005 to 2008. He died May 22 after a long battle with Crohn's disease and cancer.

In the spirit of David's teaching and community outreach, this will be a completely informal event -- a chance to drop by for as little or as long as you like to enjoy the wonders of the night sky and, if you knew David, an opportunity to share stories and conversation with friends.

If Wednesday night is not clear, the Star Party will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2. Call 243-4299 to hear an announcement about whether the night is clear and the event will proceed as planned.

A memorial fund has been established in David Friend's honor that will go toward establishing an award for excellence in science teaching and outreach. Contributions can be made by sending a check to the UM Foundation, P.O. Box 7159, Missoula, MT 59807-7159. Checks should be made payable to the UM Foundation with "in memory of David Friend" on the memo line.

 Explore Alternatives To Death Penalty

"Journey of Hope: From Violence to Healing -- Honest Conversations about the Death Penalty" will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the University Center Ballroom. Speakers include Marietta Jaeger-Lane, whose daughter was abducted in Montana, and David Kaczynski, brother of the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski.

A student/faculty forum will be held earlier that day from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in University Center Room 332. Lunch will be provided. From 5:30 to 6:30 a potluck dinner and discussion will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 202 Brooks St.

The events are sponsored by the UM Center for Ethics, Emmaus Campus Ministry, Catholic Campus Ministry, the Western Montana Spiritual Development Council and the Montana Abolition Coalition.

 Deadlines Nearing For Many Scholarships

Laure Pengelly Drake, UM's coordinator of external scholarships, reminds faculty and staff that the deadlines for many student scholarships are fast approaching. She can help qualified students with applications.

Three scholarships for undergraduate students are the Amgen Scholars Program, application deadline Feb. 1, but students should start researching host universities as early as possible; the Goldwater Scholarship, UM deadline Nov. 6; and the Udall Scholarship, UM deadline Dec. 2.

Among the most prestigious scholarships available for graduate study in most fields are the Gates Cambridge, the Rhodes, the Marshall, the Mitchell and the Jack Kent Cooke. Students who are qualified for graduate study at top American universities should consider applying and see Pengelly Drake as soon as possible.

Students who wish to apply for the Truman Scholarship must do so a year early. Candidates apply as juniors. The UM application deadline is Nov. 20.

Graduating seniors and current teachers can apply for the James Madison Fellowship Program, which provides funding for those who want to teach American history or government or social studies. Graduating seniors and recent graduates can apply for the Carnegie Junior Fellows Program, which provides one-year research assistantships in Washington, D.C., for students who desire careers in international affairs. UM deadline: Nov. 20.

This is the first year the Forest Resources category was included in this traditionally agriculture-focused program, and UM immediately seized the opportunity to apply for the grant. The grant will create a one-time fellowship program at UM for four students, two pursuing master's degrees and two pursuing doctorates. The students will develop and implement a research project focusing on the effects of mountain pine beetles, blister rust and climate change in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
