Ahmed Rashid To Speak At UM This Week

Journalist and best-selling author Ahmed Rashid of Pakistan will give the next installment of the 2008-09 President's Lecture Series at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in the University Center Ballroom.

Rashid, a leading authority on the Taliban, will present "Descent into Chaos: The United States and the Failure of Nation Building in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia." His newest book of the same title is a critique of both America's and Europe's failure to invest in rebuilding Afghanistan, and Pakistan's role in allowing Taliban and al Qaeda elements to regroup. He will explain why the American-dominated status quo in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia has been helpless in stemming the resurgence of the Taliban and al Qaeda.

Earlier Thursday from 3:40 to 5 p.m., Rashid will give a seminar titled "The Strength, Appeal and Prospects of al Qaeda Today" in the University Center Theater. Both events are free and open to the public.

Rashid's campus events are presented in conjunction with UM's First-Year Reading Experience program. The author's book "Taliban: Militant Islam, Oil and Fundamentalism in Central Asia" is the program's fall semester reading selection.

 UM Launches International Degree Programs

The Department of Geosciences, with partner institutions in Germany and Ireland, has established the University's first transnational dual and joint degree programs, creating new models for undergraduate study at UM.

UM's first dual degree program is a Bachelor of Science in international field geosciences, offered collaboratively with the University of Potsdam in Germany. Students graduating from the program will receive two separate bachelor's degrees, one from UM and one from the University of Potsdam.

The University's first joint degree program is a Bachelor of Science degree, also in international field geosciences, offered in cooperation with University College Cork in Ireland. Students graduating from the UM-University College Cork program will receive a single degree that is jointly administered and awarded by the two universities.

"Although dual and joint degrees involving institutional partnerships are relatively commonplace in Europe, these shared degree models have not been widely implemented in the United States," said geosciences Professor Marc Hendrix, UM's principal architect of the new international programs. "The greatest advantage for students in these programs is that they benefit directly from the unique educational resources available at each of the partner institutions."

 Administrator Receives Award For Innovation

Rob Gannon, director of academic and budget personnel in the Provost's Office, has been awarded a 2008 SunGard Higher Education Innovation Award.

The award, created in 2007, honors a team or an individual's demonstrated human resource innovation. Gannon was nominated for the award by UM Human Resource Services Director Betsy Hawkins for his leadership role with a joint labor management group that worked to tackle the issue of access to affordable health care for children and dependents of Montana University System employees.

The award recognizes Gannon's role in the development of the MUS Dependent Premium Waiver Program. The program helps lower-income employees who are eligible to enroll in an MUS health insurance plan with the cost of medical coverage for dependents.

Gannon will receive the award Oct. 13 in St. Louis at the National Higher Education Human Resource Awards Presentation to be held during the 2008 College and University Professional Association for Human Resources National Conference and Expo. As part of the award, UM also will receive $3,000 from SunGard Higher Education to fund an endowment or scholarship on Gannon's behalf.

UM Takes Lead With Accountability System

In an effort to produce more accountability in higher education, UM helped develop and implement a new national Web site that allows students and their families to easily compare institutions of higher learning.

President Dennison said the site will help assure that students and their families have the information needed to make sound college decisions. It provides high school students, parents, guidance counselors and other stakeholders with access to basic information about colleges, such as student characteristics, costs and learning outcomes -- all in a user-friendly format.

To date, more than 300 public four-year universities and colleges have volunteered information for the site. In Montana, in addition to UM as a founding participant, MSU-Bozeman and MSU-Billings have joined the ranks. UM-Western and Montana Tech of UM will participate soon as well.

Event Delves Into Challenges of Fair Trade

Daniel Jaffee, sociology assistant professor at Washington State University, will present the lecture at 7 p.m. in the North Underground Lecture Hall.
