Family Weekend Schedule

Friday, Nov. 3, 2017

8 a.m.-6 p.m.: Registration and Hospitality – Enjoy refreshments as you pick up your Family Weekend information packet and find out what’s on tap for the weekend. The packet includes name badges that provide access to Family Weekend events, a campus map and various coupons. Destination Missoula will also be on hand to answer questions about Missoula and provide city maps and more! Grand Foyer, University Center, third floor.

8 a.m.-5 p.m.: Enjoy a Gallery – Get immersed in one of the current exhibits on campus. Exhibit descriptions and gallery hours will be listed in your Family Weekend guide. Don’t miss the docent tours of the Montana Museum of Art & Culture at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday. Free with Family Weekend badge.

8 a.m.-5 p.m.: Visit a Class – Join a regularly scheduled class and see faculty and students in action. Select a class from the list provided in your packet, or join your student in one of their classes. No advance registration required, but please be aware that there may not be seats available in every class. Free with Family Weekend badge.

8 a.m.-5 p.m.: Talk to a Griz Guru – Do you want to talk to someone on campus about services available for your student? Does your student want to participate in particular programs or activities and you want more information? Or, is there something you always wanted to ask or find out about UM? A UM concierge will be available to help you with your questions, personally connect you with student-services offices and provide information or guidance about practically any topic. 8 a.m.-9 p.m.: Hit the Gym or Swim Laps – Campus Recreation invites you explore the Fitness & Recreation Center and attend a group fitness class for free.  Friday offerings may include mat Pilates, High-Intensity Circuit (H.I.C.), yoga, OULA, OULA.One, cycling and Slow Flow Yoga.  Run on the track, play racquetball, lift weights or shoot some hoops with your student. The Grizzly Pool is also free to families. Friday lap swim hours are 6:15-9 a.m., 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. Display your Family Weekend badge to gain entrance to the Fitness and Recreation Center or the Grizzly Pool.

10 a.m.: Tour the UM Paleontology Center – Join Collections Manager Kallie Moore on a special guided tour of the UMPC’s exhibits. Don’t miss this opportunity to check out 1.5 billion years of Montana’s fossil history. Meet on the first floor of Charles A. Clapp Building at the T-Rex skull. Free with Family Weekend badge.

10-11 a.m.: Coffee and Convos – Need a caffeine fix? Stop into The Branch Center for complimentary coffee and treats. The Branch Center opened in 2017 and is a community space for student diversity and inclusion. Chat with other families of UM students and meet the Branch Center staff who support student success. University Center Room 201. Free.

11 a.m.: Special Art Museum Tour – The Montana Museum of Art & Culture will host two free tours with esteemed Art History and Criticism Professor Rafael Chacón in honor of Family Weekend. Dr. Chacón will guide UM families through “Over There! Montanans in the Great War,” which Dr. Chacón also curated.  The exhibition features 200 objects and artworks that tell the story of WWI through the lives of Montanans who served. While MMAC is open to the public, the tour will be special for UM families. Show your Family Weekend badge to join the tour. Meloy and Paxson galleries are located in the Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center. Free with Family Weekend badge.

11a.m.-1 p.m.: Lunch at the Food Truck, Food Zoo or Corner Store – A wide variety of delicious and healthy menu options are available in the Food Zoo for the special price of $8 with your Family Weekend badge, or have your student host you using their Flex Dollars for an entry of $3.50. The Food Court in the University Center will feature a number of specials throughout the day. The Galloping Griz will be parked on the Oval, next to the Liberal Arts building, serving up a rotating menu.

Noon-Midnight: Free Games – Free billiards and table tennis with Family Weekend badge. UC Game Room, University Center, second floor.

Noon-12:45 p.m.: Photos with Monte – UM’s professional photographer will take your family photo with Monte! Be sure to leave us your email address so we can send it to you. While you are waiting for Monte, keep your eyes peeled for the Fan Photo Frame. Want a copy of your photo right away? Find and print yours at the Costco shopping event. 1 p.m.: Tour the UM Paleontology Center – Join Collections Manager Kallie Moore on a special guided tour of the UMPC’s exhibits. Be guided through Montana’s largest zoological collection – normally not open to the public – and see some amazing specimens of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles housed here on campus. Don’t miss the grizzly bear collection! Tours will be held at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sign up for one of the tours when you pick up your Family Weekend packet at registration. First come, first served. Health Sciences Building, second floor. Free.

1-3 p.m.: Family Climb at the Rock Wall – Experience UM’s indoor climbing wall! UM’s Outdoor Program created a rock-climbing class just for families! Try out this fun, new activity together, or refine your existing skills. Experienced instructors will teach rock-climbing knots, belaying and climbing techniques at UM’s indoor rock wall in the Fitness and  Recreation Center. Show your Family Weekend badge to get into the rec center for free. Climbing package costs $25/person, which includes instructors, gear and access to the climbing wall. Advance registration required. Call the Outdoor Program at 406-243-5172 to reserve your spot. A minimum of 5 participants needed.

1:10 p.m.: Campus Tour – UM historic walking tour led by UM Advocates. You’ll find out more about the state’s 124-year-old flagship institution of higher learning and get a glimpse into its future. Meet in the Grand Foyer, University Center, third floor. Free with Family Weekend badge.

1:30 p.m.: Stadium and Hall of Champions Tour – Don’t miss this unique opportunity to take a personalized, behind-the-scenes tour of the Hall of Champions and grab a sneak peek of Washington-Grizzly Stadium. A UM Advocate will guide three groups of 25 people through the building, imparting UM sports history and legendary insights along the way. Tours will depart at 1:30, 2 and 2:30 p.m. Sign up for one of the tours when you pick up your Family Weekend packet at registration. First come, first served. Adams Center Hall of Champions. 3-5 p.m.: Stargaze at the Planetarium – Pop down to the Star Gazing Room in the Payne Family Native American Center to take a tour of the current night skies over Missoula. Curry Health Center staff and UM’s department of Physics and Astronomy will co-host this event. Take a break and relax under the stars while learning about noteworthy objects, constellations and planets. Curry Health Center also will share information about the importance of stress relief and upcoming health center events and services. 3-5 p.m.: College of Education & Human Sciences Scholarship Ceremony and Reception – Join scholarship and award recipients from the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education & Human Sciences in the Music Recital Hall as they are recognized for their academic and clinical achievements. Mix and mingle with college faculty, staff and students at the reception following the award ceremony, located on the second floor of the Phyllis J. Washington Education Center, starting at 4 p.m. Free.

4:30-6:30 p.m.: Family Weekend Social in the Canyon Club – Join other UM Family Weekend participants in UM’s exclusive Canyon Club event space. Mix and mingle with other UM students and their families and enjoy hors d’oeuvres while you get a great view of Washington-Grizzly Stadium from above. Washington-Grizzly Stadium Canyon Club. Free with Family Weekend badge.

7-9 p.m.: UM Night at Costco – Taking your student shopping while you are in town? Why not make a party of it? Costco is rolling out the maroon carpet for members of the UM Family. Enjoy local food demonstrations, prizes and other UM folks! No Costco membership required. 3220 N. Reserve St., Missoula. Free with Family Weekend badge.

7-10 p.m.: 12th Annual Montana Wine & Beer Festival The festival consists of fine wine and beer tasting with food samples from some of Missoula’s top restaurants and caterers. In addition, Montana artists will be on site displaying and selling art. A silent auction will be a part of the evening festivities. All proceeds from this event benefit the Grizzly Scholarship Association and their mission of providing scholarships for student-athletes. You must be 21 or older to attend. 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.: Meredith Monk’s “A Celebration of Service” – Pioneering composer, singer, director/choreographer and creator of new opera, music theater works, films and installations, Meredith Monk will deliver a special performance that incorporates spiritual traditions spanning centuries and cultures. University Congregational Church, 405 University Ave. Family Weekend participants will receive a $3 discount by showing badge at the door. Tickets cost $12 with Family Weekend badge.  

7:30 p.m.: UM Symphony Orchestra Concert – The concert will feature one of the great Romantic Russian masterpieces, Alexander Borodin’s "Symphony No. 2." Also on the program, Jennifer Higdon’s exciting "Machine," and works that feature the different sections of the orchestra. Dennison Theatre. Family Weekend participants receive a $5 discount by showing your badge at the box office or at the door.

9 a.m.-9 p.m.: Hit the Gym – Campus Recreation invites you explore the Fitness & Recreation Center. Run on the track, play racquetball, lift weights or shoot some hoops with your student. 10 a.m.-1 p.m.: Registration – Family Weekend information packets and pre-purchased football game package tickets can be picked up at the Family Weekend pregame lunch. Grand Foyer, University Center, third floor.

Noon-1:15 p.m.: Grizzly Pregame Lunch – This isn’t your average lunch! Soak up spirited Grizzly game-day entertainment and hear from UM President Sheila Stearns while you dine. Be sure to come right at noon so you don’t miss the entertainment! (hint: it’s like your own half-time show) Family Weekend package tickets or lunch-only tickets required. University Center Ballroom, third floor.

Noon-3 p.m.: Enjoy a Gallery – Get immersed in one of the current exhibits on campus. Exhibit descriptions and gallery hours will be listed in your packet. Free with Family Weekend badge.

1:15 p.m.: Griz Walk  Gather with other Griz fans to cheer on the football team making its way from McGill Hall to the locker room. The UM Marching Band, Spirit Squad and Monte will be there to lead the team in the prep rally. Line up along the sidewalk between McGill Hall and the Adams Center and cheer on the team before they suit up. Free with Family Weekend badge.

1:25 p.m.: Walk to the Tailgate – A Family Weekend volunteer is ready to lead the way to the tailgate. Gather in front of the Adams Center and walk together as a group to the pregame tailgate hosted by the UM business school. 

1:30-3:30 p.m.: Pregame Tailgate – At UM, tailgating is serious business, and the UM School of Business Administration knows how to get the job done! SoBA invites UM Family Weekend participants to join its pregame tailgate. For more than 10 years they have cooked up their famous homemade jambalaya and offered local beverages. Mix and mingle with business school faculty, alums and other families to get ready for the big game! Refreshments are offered free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Tailgate spots 13 and 14. Free with Family Weekend badge.

3:15 p.m.: Walk to the Game Viewing Party – Family Weekend volunteers will lead the way to the Game Viewing Party. Gather on the south side of the VanBuren Street Footbridge and meet new people as you walk to Finn and Porter Lounge in the DoubleTree Hotel.

3:30 p.m.: Football Game – Welcome to Griz Nation! Cheer for the Montana Grizzlies as they take on Northern Arizona. Washington-Grizzly Stadium. Family Weekend package ticket required.

3:30 p.m.: Griz Game Viewing Party – Watch the Montana-Northern Arizona game with other Family Weekend Griz Fans at the Finn and Porter Lounge. Enjoy a free nacho bar and great door prizes. DoubleTree Hotel. Free with Family Weekend badge.

7:30 p.m.: Griz/Cat Volleyball – Cheer for the women’s Griz volleyball team as they take on Montana State. Adams Center Dahlberg Arena. Free with Family Weekend badge.

9 a.m.-noon: Weekend Service Project at the Poverello Center  – UM students volunteer 141,000 hours annually! Here is a chance to do a service project with your family. The Poverello Center provides food, shelter, help and hope to Missoula’s hungry and homeless.  Volunteer to help prepare meals and organize donations. Meet at the Grizzly Bear Statue at 8:45 a.m. to hop on a shuttle, or drive to 1110 W. Broadway St.

10 a.m.: Hike the M with President Sheila Stearns – Did you know the M Trail is the most hiked trail in Montana? Join UM President Sheila Stearns for a hike up the M before you depart for the weekend. Ascend 13 challenging switchbacks and be rewarded with stunning views of the Missoula Valley. Along the way you will get a chance to talk one-on-one with the UM president. Meet at the M Trailhead. Weather permitting. Free.

10 a.m.-10 p.m.: Hit the Gym – Campus Recreation invites you explore the Fitness & Recreation Center. Run on the track, play racquetball, lift weights or shoot some hoops with your student. 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: Brunch at the Food Zoo – Enjoy brunch in the warm and familiar setting of the Food Zoo, which features buffet-style dining and extensive menu choices.  Show your Family Weekend badge at the door and receive a discounted price of $8, or have your student host you with their Flex Dollars for an entry of $3.50. The Food Zoo is located in the Lommasson Center.
