Welcome to TGIF News. This e-mail newsletter is
provided weekly, except during the summer and
scheduled academic breaks, as a service to
students, alumni, employees and friends of The
University
of Montana.
This is the last TGIF of the 2003-04 academic
year. A summer edition will be sent in July and
regular weekly publishing will resume Aug. 27.

UM's 107th Commencement Is This
Weekend About 1,600 students are
expected to participate in ceremonies Saturday,
May 15, as UM stages its 107th Commencement on
the Missoula campus. This year's speaker is
President George Dennison, a UM alumnus who last
month became the longest-serving leader in the
University's 111-year history. The ceremony for
the professional schools begins at 9:30 a.m.,
while the ceremony for the colleges starts at 2
p.m. Both general ceremonies will be held in the
Adams Center. As in years past, schools and
colleges will report to separate locations
across campus immediately after the main
ceremonies for individual awarding of diplomas.

UM To Confer Honorary Doctorate On
Writer
A prolific writer and photographer whose
favorite subject is Montana will receive one of
UM's highest honors
during Commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 15,
on the Missoula campus. President George
Dennison will confer an Honorary Doctor of
Letters degree in geography on Helena's Rick
Graetz, a well-known Montana citizen and
promoter. Graetz will be hooded during the
College of Arts and Sciences ceremony, which
begins at 2 p.m. in the Adams Center's Dahlberg
Arena.
New Program Looks To Forge
Leaders
UM has started a student leadership program
called Ursa
Major. The multistage program will
challenge students in fun and rewarding ways,
and is designed to provide students with the
skills they need to succeed academically and
professionally after graduation. While involved
in Ursa Major, students will attend conferences
and retreats, naviagate a ropes course,
volunteer in the community and receive focused
mentoring. E-mail
the name and contact information of a student
you would like to recommend to the program.
Journalism School Retains Top 10
Ranking
For the third consecutive year, the UM School of
Journalism has placed in the top 10 of the
Hearst Journalism Awards program, a yearlong
competition made up of 12 separate contests. The
school placed 10th overall among journalism
schools nationwide and eighth in broadcast news.

Registration Under Way For Summer
Semester
Art Appreciation, Computer Literacy, Discovering
Africa and Iraq: A History are just a few of the
course titles offered this summer at
UM-Missoula. Summer Session begins May 24 with
the first of two five-week sessions. Course

Language Department Announces Name
Change
Officials in the Department of Foreign Languages
and Literatures have changed their department
name to more accurately describe their role at
UM. The unit is now known as the Department of
Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures.

'Backroads Of Montana' Premiers New
Program
"Backroads of Montana," an award-winning
television program produced by Montana PBS, will
premier a new episode Wednesday, May 19.
"Anaconda to Comertown," the 21st program in the
Backroads series, will air at 7 p.m. on Montana
PBS -- KUFM-TV Channel 11 in Missoula, KUSM-TV
Channel 9 in Bozeman, and Bresnan Communications
cable and Dish Network satellite statewide. The
episode visits the slopes with a long-time ski
instructor near Anaconda, introduces the art of
glass blowing in Townsend, shows a new monument
to Native American soldiers at the Little Big
Horn Battlefield in Crow Agency and crashes a
reunion in the nearly forgotten northeastern
Montana town of Comertown.
Missoula Hosts Special Olympics
The community is invited to join Gov. Judy
Martz, Montana Grizzlies head
football coach
Bobby Hauck and honorary chair Phyllis
Washington Wednesday, May 19, at opening
ceremonies for the Special Olympics Montana 2004
State Summer Games. This event
begins at 7 p.m. in Dahlberg Arena, where 1,000
athletes from across Montana will gather for a
Parade of Athletes. The games continue Thursday
and Friday, May 20-21, with athletic
competitions at locations throughout Missoula.
Montana Products Sought For Trade
Event
The Montana World Trade Center at UM-Missoula is
seeking Montana businesses that wish to have
goods and services displayed at the largest
agricultural trade show in the Southern
Hemisphere. New Zealand National Agriculture
Fielddays offers 1,000 exhibits and 115,000
visitors. The Commercial Service of the U.S.
Commerce Department has secured exhibition space
that will introduce American products and
technology. news

Trade Center Plans
Workshop The Montana World Trade
Center will host a two-day trade seminar at
UM-Missoula June 24-25. The event will train
Montanans about trade finance products available
from the Export-Import Bank of the United
States. Partners in the event are the Ex-Im Bank
and various federal and state trade-promotion
agencies in the region. news

Krystkowiak Named Head Men's Basketball
Coach
Former UM basketball great Larry Krystkowiak has
been named the new head coach of the Montana
Grizzlies. Krystkowiak, Montana's 25th head
coach, replaces Pat Kennedy, who recently left
UM after a two-year stint to become the head
coach at Towson University in Maryland. "Krysko"
is Montana's all-time leading scorer and
rebounder, having played for the Grizzlies
during 1983-86. He then spent 10 years in the
NBA playing for such teams as the Utah Jazz,
Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles
Lakers. Most recently head coach of the Idaho
Stampede, he began his coaching career at UM,
serving as an assistant coach from 1998 to 2000.
Former Griz Are NFL Bound
The recent NFL draft was kind to former Grizzly
football player Dylan McFarland of Kalispell. He
was selected in the seventh round of the NFL
draft -- the 207th pick out of 255. The 6-foot-6,
305-pound left tackle was picked up by the
Buffalo Bills. He's the first Griz player to be
selected in the draft since 1999. In addition,
15 minutes after the draft ended, Chris Snyder,
UM's record-setting kicker from Spokane, Wash.,
signed a free-agent deal with the Detroit Lions.
Bogner Becomes Top Runner
Kerry Bogner, a senior from Cincinnati, earned
Academic All-American honors in cross country
from the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country
Coaches Association. Bogner is one of 46
Division-I cross country athletes to earn the
award and one of only two Big Sky Conference
runners who received the recognition. Bogner, a
liberal studies major who carries a 3.74 GPA,
finished 12th at the Mountain Region
Championships in Ogden, Utah, this past fall to
earn Academic All-American accolades.
Naked Bears Are On The Prowl At
UM
The Montana Grizzly Scholarship Association has
launched Grizzly Prowl, an effort to raise money
for UM student-athletes by having area artists
paint life-size, Fiberglas grizzly bears that
will then be auctioned. Two UM art students are
among the artists who have been chosen to
"dress" the 35 bears with unique designs. program site
