Lecture Explores ‘Red Wave’ In Latin America

Trends and events that have brought left-wing critics of the United States to the forefront of Latin American politics are the subject of the next presentation of the President’s Lecture Series at UM.

Kenneth Maxwell, a pre-eminent expert on Latin America, will present “The Red Wave in Latin America: What the Turn to the Left Means for the United States” at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, in the University Center Ballroom.

Earlier that day from 3:10 to 4:30 p.m., Maxwell will give a seminar titled “Contemporary Brazil: Continuity and Change” in Gallagher Business Building Room 123.

Both events are free and open to the public and presented in collaboration with UM’s Davidson Honors College.

Maxwell is director of the Brazil Studies Program at Harvard University’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and a visiting professor in Harvard’s Department of History.

His most recent book is a new edition of the classic “Conflicts and Conspiracies: Brazil and Portugal, 1750-1808” -- widely known in Brazil in translation as “A Devassa da Devassa.”

Montana Safe Schools Center Established At UM

The Montana Board of Regents has approved establishment of the Montana Safe Schools Center at UM.

Located in the School of Education’s Division of Educational Research and Service, the center continues the work of longstanding school and community safety projects and helps to fulfill the outreach initiatives of UM’s education school.

“This is a thrilling development,” said Roberta Evans, interim dean of the School of Education. “DERS has a long and highly successful track record of working on critical safety and child-wellness issues in schools all across Montana. Establishing this new center is an excellent step for UM, as well as for Montana’s children.”

DERS collaboration on safety projects at the national level and innovative work with Montana’s schools earned them an invitation last year from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools to join a group of national-level school safety centers.

In addition to providing the DOE with information about state activities, these centers also help influence national education policies such as No Child Left Behind. That act is slated for reauthorization next year, and one of the components being discussed by these centers are definitions of what constitutes a safe school.

UM Hosts Fulbright Scholar From Kyrgyzstan

UM has been selected to host Fulbright Visiting Scholar Kubanychbek Taabaldiev, who has headed Kyrgyzstan’s national news agency, Kabar, since 1998.

Taabaldiev is in the United States to research avenues for transition from state-controlled to independent media in his country, one of many in Central Asia aiming to develop a democratic state with free mass media.

He will work with Associate Professor Ray Ekness, chair of UM’s Department of Radio-Television in the School of Journalism.

Taabaldiev’s research at UM will focus on media in rural areas. Kyrgyzstan has many geographical characteristics in common with Montana, and its economy is largely agricultural.

Taabaldiev currently teaches international journalism courses and techniques of news writing at Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital.

He is one of about 800 professional and faculty Fulbright Scholars who will study in the United States during the 2006-07 academic year.

‘A Night For Noah’ To Raise Money For Student

The Jubileers and other volunteer performers, including a dance troupe, comedian and recorder quartet, will come together Thursday, Dec. 7, to raise money for ailing UM student Noah Ginnings.

“A Night for Noah,” hosted by the UM Advocates, begins at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. Admission to the event is free, although donations will be accepted.

Ginnings, a UM Advocate, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2001. After undergoing surgery to remove it, the tumor reappeared and in 2003 was treated with radiation, again disappearing.

This past summer Ginnings learned his tumor was growing again. This time, doctors have decided to treat it with chemotherapy.

The UM fundraiser will help with Ginnings’ ongoing medical bills. A bake sale and silent auction will be held in conjunction with the concert to raise additional funds.

Those who cannot attend but would like to help can make donations to the Noah Ginnings Medical Fund at Mountain West Bank. For more information, contact the bank at 406-542-6222.

Museum, Gallery Show Art By Master Painters

New works by local artists Delbert Gish, Jennifer Li and Neil Patterson will be featured during a special showing next weekend in Missoula.

“Art at Home” takes place from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, and from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at 888 Evans, a recently restored home one block south of the UM campus.

The event is presented by the Dana Gallery and the Montana Museum of Art & Culture at UM. There is no charge for admission.

The eclectic, two-day exhibit will showcase the talents of the three oil painters. Gish, who has been published in numerous texts, is a modern master with national recognition; Li’s meticulous paintings are grounded in the varnish of the Dutch Golden Age; and Patterson is an elected member of the prestigious Oil Painters of America.

The artists’ works will be available for sale during the show, and half the proceeds from “Art at Home” sales will be donated to MMAC.

For more information, call the museum at 406-243-2019.

 UM Presents Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’

The UM Department of Drama/Dance will present one of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays Dec. 5-9 on campus.

“Richard III” takes the stage each night at 7:30 p.m. in the Montana Theatre of the Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center.

“Richard III” invites the audience on a moral holiday, as Shakespeare's most deliciously deceptive villain makes no pretenses about his motives or ambitions. This timeless tale of the power-hungry, malicious sociopath who would be king is a study in the arts of deception and political manipulation.

For ticket information, contact the Drama/Dance Box Office at 406-243-4581.
