As a survivor of the Bataan Death March and a Japanese prisoner of war for more than three years, Montana artist Ben Steele's work provides some of the most haunting images of World War II. A new exhibition opening Friday, Sept. 23, at the Montana Museum of Art & Culture at UM features his oil paintings and drawings. Read more

UM Receives $9.9 Million National Institutes of Health Grant
UM recently received a five-year, $9.9 million grant from the National Center for Research Resources, an entity of the National Institutes of Health, to fund research on physiological processes and diseases from the standpoint of atomic structure, chemistry and physics. Read more

University to Honor Four Distinguished Alums at Homecoming
Four outstanding UM graduates will receive 2011 Distinguished Alumni Awards during Homecoming weekend festivities Sept. 30 - Oct.1. The awards are the highest honor presented by the UM Alumni Association. This year's distinguished alumni are Thomas Dahmer of Hong Kong, Jack Shanstrom of Billings, J.K. Simmons of Hollywood, Calif., and Brian Wesbury of Wheaton, Ill. Read more

Mansfield Center Hosts Chinese Delegation
Twenty Chinese natural resource professionals have arrived in Montana in a two-way exchange program under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of State and organized by UM's Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center. The program sends Americans to China and brings Chinese citizens to the U.S., with the goal of increasing understanding of natural resource issues and one another. Read more

UM 'Math Day' Offers Fun Learning for Missoula Students
Missoula eighth-grade and high school students and teachers interested in multiplying their mathematics knowledge are invited to participate in Math Day activities this month at UM. The Department of Mathematic Sciences will observe the day on Friday, Sept. 23, with free, daylong workshops on various topics, a career panel and lunch, all held in the Gallagher Business Building. Griz beat Cal-Poly 37-23 in 2011 Home Opener
The UM Grizzlies dominated the second half and registered a hard-fought 37-23 victory Sept. 10 over the Cal Poly Mustangs in UM's Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
The Griz host defending FCS national champion Eastern Washington on Saturday, Sept. 17, in the teams' Big Sky Conference opener.
