On Feb. 16, UM celebrated its 119th birthday. President Royce Engstrom and Alumni Relations Director Bill Johnston talk about the tradition of Charter Day at the University in the latest edition of The President's Update.

Lecture to Examine Current Scientific Knowledge on AIDS
An internationally recognized researcher known for his contributions in human and animal genetics, evolutionary biology, AIDS and other fields will deliver the next installment of the President's Lecture Series at UM.
Stephen J. O'Brien will present "Three Decades of Genomics and AIDS: Tiptoe Towards a Solution" at 8 p.m. Monday, March 5, in the University Theatre. O'Brien, who founded and currently heads the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity at the National Cancer Institute, will discuss the state of scientific knowledge on the disease. Read more

Online Learning Conference Open for Registration
The fourth annual Extended Learning Institute will be held Thursday and Friday, March 8-9, at UM. Registration is open now and costs $60. The two-day event titled "New Visions of Learning in a Networked World" is open to anyone interested in online learning at higher education institutions. Read more

Explore a Career in Student Affairs
The Division of Student Affairs at UM will acceptapplications beginning Tuesday, Feb. 28, for a student-employment program that allows individuals to explore career opportunities in various Student Affairs departments. Read more

Survey Finds Civic-Minded Faculty at UM
UM faculty are more civic-minded and involved in their community than those at UM's peer institutions, according to the results of a recent national survey of university and college faculty. Read more

For the second year in a row, a UM accounting graduate student has earned a prestigious national scholarship. Read more

President Wants Improved Foresters' Ball
Started as the Lumberjacks' Dance in 1916, the Foresters' Ball has a long and storied tradition at UM. The event raises money for student scholarships and showcases programs in UM's College of Forestry and Conservation. Read more

High Schoolers Battle for WorldQuest Title
Nearly 60 teams of high school students from around the state are heading to UM to compete at the World Affairs Council of Montana's eighth annual Academic WorldQuest competition on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Read more

UC Hosts Diversity Film Series
The University Center at UM will debut the Diversity Film Series with a showing of "Wal-Mart: The High Price of a Low Cost" at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in UC Rooms 326 and 327. Read more

MMAC Hosts Reception for New Exhibitions
The Montana Museum of Art & Culture will host an opening reception for two new exhibitions from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 2, in the Performing Arts and Radio/TV Center Lobby at UM.
The exhibitions, "Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib: Black Hole/Whiteout" and "Curiosity: Selections from the Permanent Collection," will be on display through May 21. The exhibitions are free and open to the public. Read more

Survey: Montanans More Positive About Economy
Montana's consumers were significantly more upbeat about the economy than their counterparts elsewhere in the country at the close of last year, according to a poll conducted by UM's Bureau of Business and Economic Research.
BBER Director Patrick Barkey reports the most recent Montana Poll Index of Consumer Sentiment from December 2011 was 106.6, up from 100.8 in December 2010. The Montana index peaked at 132.5 in December 2007. Read more

UM Theatre & Dance Presents 'The Cherry Orchard'
The UM School of Theatre and Dance present "The Cherry Orchard," the final full-length play by Russian master Anton Chekhov, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28-March 3 and March 6-10 in the Masquer Theatre. The tragic comedy charts the abrupt descent of the wealthy Ranevskaya family and, with a fresh adaptation by Todd Stoppard, creates a bold meditation on social change. Read more

Men's Tennis Claims 4-3 Victory over MSU Rivals
The Grizzly men's tennis team continued its winning ways with a 4-3 victory over Montana State University on Feb. 18 at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center in Bozeman. Read more

UM Freshman Named Golfer of the Week for Performance
UM freshman Tara Green was named Big Sky Golfer of the Week for her championship performance at the Folino Invitational held Feb. 19-21 in Industry Hills, Calif. Read more

Track and Field Teams Rally Before Championships
UM's indoor track and field athletes produced their best meet of the season at the Bobcat Open held Feb. 17 at Montana State University in Bozeman. Read more

Griz Ranked 18th in Poll; Host Lumberjacks, Cats this Weekend
The 20-6 UM Grizzly basketball team is ranked 18th in the most recent Mid-Major Top 25 poll, which came out Feb. 21. The Grizzlies, winners of nine games in a row and 15 of their last 16, received 191 points in the poll. Read more
Lady Griz Shooting for Season Sweep of Cats
The Montana women's basketball team will play its final home game of the season Saturday when it hosts Montana State. The Lady Griz and Bobcats will tip off at 2 p.m. at Dahlberg Arena. Read more
