Annual Kyi-Yo Event Celebrates Native Heritage
The public is invited to enjoy the unique talents of some of the best Native American dancers and drum groups in North America at the 44th annual Kyi-Yo Celebration on Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, in the Adams Center at UM.
The theme of this year's celebration is "Empowerment through Education." It recognizes the strength and perseverance of Native people and culture, as well as the commitment of Native American students who have embarked on the path to embrace education and strengthen their families and communities. Seven UM Students, Graduates Named Fulbright Scholars
Seven UM students and recent graduates will travel to countries around the world as recipients of Fulbright U.S. Student scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year. Read more

The Important Role of Research at UM

Family, Colleagues Gather to Remember Professor Scott Woods
A memorial service was held April 16 at UM to honor Professor Scott Woods, who passed away April 7 after a long battle with cancer. Friends, family and colleagues from the College of Forestry and Conservation gathered together to tell stories and celebrate his life. Read more

Conference to Explore Gender Equality, Women's Empowerment

The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center at UM will bring together a group of top experts from across Montana, the country and the world to examine the diverse issues of gender equality and women's empowerment during its annual conference this month.
The 27th annual Mansfield Conference, "Holding Up Half the Sky: Women's Leadership and Development," will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in the University Center Ballroom. Read more

Author to Lecture on Economic Inequality
An economist whose current research focuses on the measurement and consequences of inequality in the world economy will deliver the final installment of the 2011-12 President's Lecture Series at UM. Read more

State Sees Boost in Tourism, Dollars Spent
More than 10.5 million out-of-state travelers visited Montana in 2011, a 1.6 percent increase over 2010, according to UM's Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research. Read more

Rising gas prices are likely to have a minimal effect on nonresident travel to Montana this summer, according to a recent survey conducted by UM's Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research. Read more

Princeton Review Lists UM in Top Green Colleges Guide
For the third consecutive year, the Princeton Review saluted UM as one of the nation's most environmentally responsible "green colleges."
UM made "The Princeton Review's Guide to 322 Green Colleges: 2012 Edition," which profiles 322 institutions of higher education in the United States and Canada that demonstrate notable commitments to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation. Mansfield Center Helps Bring Foreign Professionals to Missoula
Western Montana community leaders currently are hosting 10 female professionals from Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia for short-term assignments in their offices as they participate in the U.S. Department of State-sponsored Professional Fellows Program. The visits were made possible by a federal award to the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center at UM. Read more

Theatre & Dance Closes Season with Popular Musical

The UM School of Theatre & Dance will close the season with "Chicago," the six-time Tony Award-winning musical.
"Chicago" runs in the Montana Theatre of the Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center at 7:30 p.m. April 24-28 and May 1-5. There also will be matinee performances at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 28, and Saturday, May 5.
Set in the Windy City at the height of the Roaring '20s, would-be star Roxie Hart persuades her hapless husband to cover for a murder she committed until he finds out the victim was Roxie's boyfriend. On death row, Roxie and another "Merry Murderess," the seasoned showgirl Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines until they ultimately join forces in search of fame, fortune and acquittal.

Perfect: Men's Tennis Finishes 8-0 in Big Sky Conference

The Grizzly men's tennis team defeated Montana State 5-2 April 15 at the Peak Racquet Club to complete a perfect 8-0 conference season and extend its winning streak to 10.
The Griz also clinched the outright Big Sky title in advance of the Big Sky Championship on April 14 at the Gold River Racquet Club in Gold River, Calif. Read more

Lights, Offense Shine Bright at Spring Football Game
The Grizzlies' recent spring football game played under the new lights in Washington-Grizzly Stadium set a Football Championship Subdivision attendance record, and the Grizzly Scholarship Association-sponsored event also generated substantial revenue.
The game raised approximately $50,000, with all proceeds going toward UM's Athletic Facility Improvement Project. Read more

Waldhauser, Drennen Named 2012 Grizzly Cup Recipients
UM student-athletes Katrina Drennen and Bryan Waldhauser were recognized as the school's 2012 Grizzly Cup recipients at the 20th annual Robert O. Lindsay Scholar-Athlete Honors Banquet held April 18 at UM. Read more

Forson Wins Discus at Mid-Major Challenge
Brandon Forson, a freshman from Deer Lodge, won the discus with a throw of 162 feet, 5 inches in a field of 21 at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge held April 13 in Sacramento, Calif. Forson had the only event victory for UM at the three-day meet, but Montana had six other top-three finishes. Read more

Women's Tennis Secures Big Sky Tournament Berth
The Brawl of the Wild took place on the hard court as the UM women's tennis team claimed a 6-1 victory over Montana State University on April 15 at the Peak Health and Wellness Center Racquet Club in Missoula. With the win, the Grizzlies clinched the third seed in the Big Sky Conference Championship. Read more
