Commencement May 12 in Washington-Grizzly Stadium

 

UM Commencement ceremonies to be held May 12

 

More than 3,700 graduates and degree candidates are invited to participate in UM's 115th Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 12, in Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

 

The general ceremony for UM's professional schools, the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Technology will begin at 10 a.m. The stadium opens at 8 a.m., and guests should be seated in the westside seating area by 9:30 a.m. No tickets are required.

 

Sheila Stearns, outgoing Montana commissioner of higher education and a 1968 UM graduate, will deliver this year's Commencement address. Read more

UM to Present Honorary Degree to Community Leader

UM will present an honorary degree to the great-grandson of Oscar Craig, the University's first president, during 2012 Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 12.

 

A. Warren Wilcox, a Missoula native and UM graduate who has played an active role in local businesses and community organizations, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. UM's School of Business Administration nominated him for the honor. Read more

Business School Honors UM Alumni for Career Acheivements

The UM School of Business Administration will honor three alumni for outstanding career achievements at the 65th Annual Donor Recognition and Scholarship Awards Banquet on Thursday, May 3. Read more

As the the end of the semester nears and campus prepares for Commencement, UM also celebrates Employee Recognition Day. UM distributed 17 awards to UM employees during a ceremony held April 20. During his weekly video address, President Royce Engstrom discusses professor salaries within the Montana University System as compared to the national average.

UM Lands Grant to Host Tobacco Summit

The UM College of Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences recently secured a grant that will allow UM to host the seventh National Smokeless and Spit Tobacco Summit next August. Read more

MTPR Concludes Successful Pledge Drive

Riding the wave of pledges for cats, dogs, chickens, horses, sheep and other pets in the "Pet Wars" finale April 22, Montana Public Radio raised $567,762 during its spring on-air fund drive, about 95 percent of the $600,000 goal. Read more

Greeks Honored at Annual Awards Banquet

Delta Gamma sorority took home UM Greek Chapter of the Year honors during the annual Greek Life Awards Banquet held April 15 in the University Center Ballroom. Read more

Senior Earns Prestigious Hearst Fellowship

UM journalism student and Montana Kaimin editor Jayme Fraser has been selected as one of three Hearst Journalism Fellows, an opportunity that will have her working two nine-month stints at Hearst newspapers beginning in September. Read more

Communications Expert to Lecture at UM

A pioneer in the field of organizational communication will discuss how his research in the field applies to diverse topics such as homelessness, the U.S. health care industry and NASA during a two-day visit to UM. Read more  

Pharmacy Student Wins National Competition

Stacey Pascoe, a third-year UM pharmacy student from Butte, recently won first place in the National Patient Counseling Competition of the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists, held in New Orleans. Read more

Student to Serve as Kimmitt Intern in D.C.

Travis Vincent, a UM senior from Bigfork, will travel to Washington, D.C., this summer as the recipient of the 2012 J. Stanley Kimmitt Public Service Internship. Read more

UM Researchers Map Hottest Places on Earth

Identifying the hottest place on Earth has long been a contentious issue, but UM researchers recently analyzed satellite data of land surface temperatures to do just that. Read more  

Greening UM Awards Honor Sustainability Advocates 

UM honored members of the campus community who have proven their dedication to help the University become more sustainable during an April 20 ceremony on the Oval. Read more

 

UM Students Display Art During Senior Exhibition
The UM School of Art will present the 2012 BFA Senior Thesis Exhibition. The exhibit will be on display in the Gallery of Visual Arts and in the University Center Gallery through May 11. Read more

Mark of Excellence Awards

Ten UM student journalism projects received first place recognition in the Society of Professional Journalists Region 10 Mark of Excellence Awards. Read more 

 

Celebrate Alternative Transportation During 'Walk N Roll' Week

 

Walk N Roll Week at UM April 30-May 4UM invites students, faculty, staff and the public to head to campus using any mode of transportation other than driving a car alone during the week of April 30-May 4.

 

As part of Missoula's Bike Walk Bus Week, the Associated Students of UM sponsoring "Walk N Roll" week. Read more

Undergraduate Advising Center Wins National Tech Award
"How Pizza and Burritos Can Help
You Get Started On Your Paper"

 

The Undergraduate Advising Center at UM recently earned an Outstanding Advising Technology Innovation Certificate of Merit from the National Academic Advising Association for creating a series of online tutorials and informational videos to help current and incoming UM students succeed.

 

UM academic adviser Shannon Janssen developed KPCN: The Peer Connection Network. Under Janssen's supervision, students in the Undergraduate Advising Center's Peer Advising program write, act, direct and produce the videos. Read more

Women's, Men's Tennis Teams Fall 4-0 in Championship Matches

The UM women's tennis team fell short of its first conference title with a 4-0 loss to Sacramento State on April 22 in the Big Sky Conference Championship held at the Gold River Racquet Club in Sacramento, Calif. Read more

 

The Grizzly men's tennis team's season also came to an end April 22 when they dropped the Big Sky Conference Championship match 4-0 to Sacramento State at the Gold River Racquet Club. Read more  

Grizzlies Shoot Low, Finish Fourth at Golf Championship
The UM golf team shot 299, its lowest single-round score of the tournament, but the Grizzlies could not catch the tournament leaders and finished fourth at the Big Sky Conference Golf Championship held April 24 at the Ocotillo Golf Course in Chandler, Ariz. Read more 
Griz-Cat Dual this Saturday in Bozeman

The Montana track and field teams will travel to Bozeman this weekend for their annual dual against Montana State University. The meet will take place Saturday at the MSU Track and Field Complex. Read more  

Registration Now Open for GSA Golf Tournament
It's about time to dust of the golf clubs. Each year the Grizzly Scholarship Association sponsors a golf tournament to benefit the Department of Athletics' scholarship fund. This year the 32nd annual Conoco Grizzly Golf Tournament sponsored by Summit Beverage will take place Friday, June 8, at the Canyon River Golf Club in Missoula. Read more
