UM Launches Online Training to Prevent Sexual Violence

PETSA Harnessing the talents of its faculty, staff and students, UM has created a new online tutorial to educate students about sexual violence issues.

 

The training is titled Personal Empowerment Through Self-Awareness. PETSA consists of short, informative videos and a quiz and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. All UM students are required to complete the training starting this fall, and they must complete it before registering for spring semester classes.

President's Lecture Series Kicks Off with Environmental Focus

UM's 2012-13 President's Lecture Series will begin Wednesday, Sept. 5, with a lecture from acclaimed investigative journalist Andrew Nikiforuk titled "The Energy of Slaves: Oil and the New Servitude."

 

The lecture will begin at 8 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. Nikiforuk also will present a seminar titled "Empire of the Beetle: How Human Folly and a Tiny Bug are Killing North America's Great Forests" earlier the same day from 3:10 to 4:30 p.m. in Gallagher Business Building Room 123. Both the lecture and seminar are free and open to the public. Read more

UM Fundraising for Powerful Telescope Array to Locate 'Exoplanets'

Development of a new partnership between the UM Department of Physics and Astronomy, the California Institute of Technology and Pennsylvania State University will place UM on the cutting edge of the search for new planets and help address the age-old question, "Are we alone?"

 

UM is working with the astronomy departments of Caltech and Penn State to build a new array of telescopes called MINERVA, which all three universities will use to search for planets orbiting nearby stars. The ultimate goal, according to UM Assistant Professor of Astrophysics Nate McCrady, is to locate earthlike, rocky planets capable of supporting liquid water, the most basic building block of life as we know it. 

 

"The next generation of telescopes can look at planets located around nearby stars," McCrady said. "We need to tell them where they should be looking." Read more

UM to Honor Four Distinguished Alumni at Homecoming

Four outstanding UM graduates will receive 2012 Distinguished Alumni Awards during Homecoming weekend festivities Sept. 21-22. The awards are the highest honor presented by the UM Alumni Association. This year's distinguished alumni are Doug Chadwick of Whitefish, Don Molloy of Missoula, Thomas Riggert of Brisbane, Australia, and Joseph Valacich of Tucson, Ariz. Read more

President Engstrom Outlines Institutional Priorities 

UM President Royce Engstrom delivered his annual State of the University address Aug. 24. He outlined achievements of the past year, challenges faced by the University and community, and some exciting new developments coming in the 2012-13 academic year.

 

The president affirmed that improving campus safety through education is a major priority this year. Part of this focus will include the new mandatory Personal Empowerment Through Self Awareness training for all students, soon to be followed by a version for faculty and staff.

 

Other developments to watch for this year include a new effort to attain funding for a new Missoula College (formerly the COT) facility on the South Campus, recommendations regarding brand strategy from Mind Over Media, the appointment of several cabinet positions in the administration and the Global Leadership Initiative.

UM Offers Master's in Athletic Training

The Montana Board of Regents recently approved a new master's degree in athletic training at UM. The program will begin accepting students in the spring, and the first class of students will start during summer 2013. Read more

Author to Present History of Yellowstone

George Black, author of "Empire of Shadows: The Epic Story of Yellowstone," will present a lecture tracing the history of the national park at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at UM. Read more

UC Hosts DUI Education Event Sept. 6

The University Center at UM will sponsor "Drinking, Driving and Other Delusions," an interactive event for students to explore the consequences of drinking and driving from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, on the Oval. Read more

FullSet Brings Traditional Irish Music to UM

The Friends of Irish Studies will present the traditional Irish band FullSet in a concert at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 9, at the George and Jane Dennison Theatre at UM. Read more

Football Opens Season Against South Dakota
Grizzly football will open the 2012 season at home Saturday, Sept. 1, playing the South Dakota Coyotes for the sixteenth time and the first since 1999. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. in UM's Washington-Grizzly Stadium. Read more
Griz Spikers Face Another Stern Tournament Test 
UM's volleyball team will play its second of three pre-Big Sky Conference tournaments this weekend when the Grizzlies travel to San Diego for San Diego State's Holiday Inn Mission Valley Aztec Challenge. Read more

Texas Tech, Heads to Boise

Texas Tech's Jessica Fuston collected her third career hat trick to lead the Red Raiders to a 4-0 victory over Montana on Aug. 26, the final day of the Texas Christian University Invitational at Fort Worth, Texas. Read more

Montana Rep Opens Fall Educational Outreach Tour  Montana Rep Fall Tour

The Montana Repertory Theatre will present "An Unladylike Battle for Survival in the Sunnyside Library" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 6-8, in the Masquer Theatre at UM.

 

There's a new librarian in town by the name of Kerosene Kevin, and he's brought with him a novel idea -- books are for burning, not reading. Fortunately, during this 50-minute play, you'll see that some of those living on the shelves of Sunnyside have decided to fight back. Read more
