UM Names Kent Haslam New Director of Athletics

After conducting a nationwide search, President Royce Engstrom has named Kent Haslam the next director of athletics at UM.
Haslam, currently associate athletic director for development with the UM Foundation, will start his new duties Monday, Sept. 17.
"I believe Kent Haslam is the right person to lead The University of Montana athletic program into one of national distinction for athletics, academics and campus and community involvement," Engstrom said.
"I am honored to be named the new director of athletics at The University of Montana," Haslam said. "I have tremendous respect for the tradition and history of this great University and look forward to helping advance the overall mission of UM. Read more

Researchers Receive State-of-the-Art Microscope
UM is the recent recipient of a VEGA-3 Variable Pressure Scanning Electron Microscope, which was installed in a Clapp Building lab on Sept. 12, by an engineer of the TESCAN company.
The $425,000 microscope is funded primarily by the National Science Foundation's Major Research Instrumentation program and will allow UM researchers to look at objects at the micron and nanometer scale. The microscope uses electrons instead of light to magnify objects tens of thousands of times, magnifying one-millionth to one-billionth of a meter. Read more

Author to Address U.S. Future with Pakistan, Afghanistan
Ahmed Rashid, author and leading authority on the Taliban, will present a lecture titled "The Consequences of American Foreign Policy in Afghanistan and Pakistan" as part of the President's Lecture Series at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the University Center Ballroom at UM.
Rashid will discuss his latest book, "Pakistan on the Brink: The Future of America, Pakistan and Afghanistan." He writes that after 11 years of war and nation-building in Afghanistan, "the bare bones of a functioning country are still missing." Meanwhile, relations between Pakistan and the U.S. are at their lowest point ever. That country, too, is on the edge of a precipice, and the war policies of Presidents Bush and Obama have failed, for reasons Rashid is uniquely prepared to explain. Read more

New Crown of the Continent E-Magazine Available
The summer 2012 issue of the Crown of the Continent e-magazine has been released and can be found online at http://issuu.com/crown-continent/docs/crown-summer-2012.
Articles discuss Mel Ruder's Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the June 1964 floods and the Scapegoat Wilderness celebrating 40 years. The issue also includes an excerpt and images from "Julius Seyler and the Blackfeet: An Impressionist at Glacier Park" by Bill Farr, as well as stunning western photography and a record of regional weather extremes. Appalachian State quarterback Jamal Jackson threw two touchdown passes and running back Steven Miller rushed for two scores as the Mountaineers held off the never-say-die UM Grizzlies for a 35-27 victory Sept. 8 in ASU's Kidd Brewer Stadium at Boone, N.C. Read more
The Grizzlies (1-1) are back home this Saturday, Sept. 15, hosting the Liberty Flames (0-2) in UM's Washington-Grizzly Stadium, with kickoff slated for 1:30 p.m. Read more

Volleyball Takes Fourth in Tourney, Opens Conference Play
Despite going 1-2 and finishing in fourth place at the 2012 Best Western Grant Creek Inn Invitational held Sept. 7-8, Montana was able to take mostly positives from the tournament as the Grizzlies head into Big Sky Conference play. Read more
The team opened conference play this week with perhaps the league's toughest road trip. The Grizzlies played defending league champion and 2012 preseason favorite Northern Colorado (7-2) Thursday, Sept. 13, at Greeley, Colo., and will face North Dakota (4-6) at 6 p.m. MST Saturday, Sept. 15.
