Homecoming Celebration Continues Through Weekend
The community is invited to join the festivities at UM's 2012 Homecoming Week, which runs through Sept. 22 with a full schedule of traditional events.
This year's Homecoming theme, "We Are Montana," embodies the united spirit of UM students, alumni, supporters, faculty and staff -- a spirit that spreads throughout all of Missoula and Montana. "We Are Montana" declares our pride in UM's legacy of academic excellence and our tradition of athletic success. Read more

UM Invites Community to 'Be a Part of the Heart'
UM students, faculty and staff plan to gather with members of the Missoula community on the UM Oval to "Be Part of the Heart" on Wednesday, Sept. 26.
"Be Part of the Heart" is Missoula's first-ever grassroots attempt to gather 2,000 people dressed in red to stand in the shape of a heart, making a dramatic statement in support of healthy hearts. Read more
The annual Heart Walk and 5K Heart Run, a fundraiser for the American Heart and Stroke Association, will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at UM.
More than 600 people are expected to turn out for the event to raise funds to support the education and research efforts of the American Heart Association, a nonprofit that raises awareness of cardiovascular disease and stroke and promotes heart-healthy lifestyles. This year's goal is $115,000. Read more

Third Annual Crown of the Continent
Conference in Fernie Sept. 27-28
Anyone interested in the past, present and future of the Crown of the Continent is invited to register for the 3rd Annual Conference of the Roundtable on the Crown of the Continent, titled "Pathways to Prosperity: Caring for Communities in the Crown of the Continent."
The two-day conference is organized by the UM Center for Natural Resources and Environmental Policy. It aims to connect people to sustain and enhance culture, community and conservation in the 18-million acre Crown of the Continent region, which is centered on Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park and parts of Montana, British Columbia and Alberta. It will take place Thursday and Friday, Sept. 27-28, at the Fernie Mountain Lodge in Fernie, British Columbia. Registration costs $100 and includes meals. Read more

M Student Has Photo Featured on Cover of Science
UM graduate student Will Freihofer's close-up shot of a Japanese rhinoceros beetle was featured on the cover of the August issue of Science magazine. Freihofer photographed the beetle to supplement UM Professor Doug Emlen's article "A Mechanism of Extreme Growth and Reliable Signaling in Sexually Selected Ornaments and Weapons."
Freihofer is a second-year graduate student at UM's School of Journalism. He was interested in Emlen's research of the huge-horned beetles, and over the semester documenting the lab work, learned how to use macro photography to take the best bug shots. Read more

Mansfield Library Raises Literacy Awareness
Gov. Brian Schweitzer has proclaimed October Information Literacy Awareness Month in Montana, and the Mike and Maureen Mansfield Library at UM is happy to bring awareness to its information literacy curriculum. Read more

The Montana Law Review will dedicate this year's Honorable James R. Browning Symposium at UM to an examination of election law and the state of the republican form of government in the states.Read more

UM Piano Professor Records
CD of Maslanka Composition
When UM piano Professor Christopher Hahn moved to Missoula in 2004, he made a point of reaching out to a local composer. That composer, David Maslanka, is world renowned for his symphonies, chamber music and percussion ensembles. Eight years later, Hahn, as part of the CanAm Piano Duo, has released a recording of "This is the World," an original composition by Maslanka. Read more

Theatre and Dance Presents 'The Arabian Nights'

Under a hazy, smoke-filled sky due to nearby forest fires, the 14th-ranked UM Grizzly football team defeated the visiting Liberty University Flames 34-14 Sept. 15 in UM's final non-league game of the season in Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

Montana unleashed 29 shots on New Mexico State during their match held Sept. 14, putting 12 of those on goal, but Aggies keeper Mikaela Bitner stopped them all, and the teams played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw. Read more
The team will open its nine-match Big Sky Conference schedule this week when it hosts Idaho State and Weber State at South Campus Stadium. The Grizzlies will host the Bengals at 4 p.m. Friday and the Wildcats at 1 p.m. Sunday. Read more
