Community Invited to Missoula College Building Plan Open House
UM President Royce Engstrom and UM officials invite the community to learn about the future of the proposed Missoula College building and take part in a community conversation from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the UM Golf Course Clubhouse.
The open house will give community members the opportunity to ask questions and learn the history of how the location was selected, see where the buildings will be located and how it fits into the South Campus Master Plan, and learn how the golf course can be reconfigured.
"This proposed building will be an exceptional asset for Missoula College students," said Engstrom. "We want the community to be engaged in and supportive of this effort." Read more

UM Receives Grant to Support Student Assault Response, Prevention
UM has received a $297,731 grant from the Department of Justice to improve evaluation and implementation of a comprehensive student assault response and prevention program.
The Office of Violence Against Women grant will be used to expand, reorganize and streamline UM's approach to addressing interpersonal violence. The grant will fund a full-time director of student assault programming position for three years and provide support for a variety of UM programs and services. Read more

First-Year Reading Experience Author to Present Lecture, Forum

Maile Meloy, Helena native and author of UM's First-Year Reading Experience book "Both Ways is the Only Way I Want It," will visit campus to present a lecture and host a student forum Oct. 17-18.
The lecture, titled "Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It," will begin at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the George and Jane Dennison Theatre. Meloy will discuss how she came to write the book, her writing process and the role Montana has played in her writing. The student forum will be held at 11:10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, in the University Center Theater. Read more

Lecture Suggests Healthier College Sex Lives
The University Center at UM will host "Finding the Doorbell," a lecture about saner, healthier sex in college by speaker Cindy Pierce at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the UC Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public. Read more

Grants to Fund Literary Radio Program
Montana Public Radio has received a $20,000 grant from the Steele-Reese Foundation and a $6,000 grant from Humanities Montana. Read more

Montana Public Media Offers Election News
Montana's public broadcasting services, Montana Public Radio, Yellowstone Public Radio and MontanaPBS, have joined with UM's School of Journalism to launch an election year website and collaborate on broadcast debates and election programming. Read more

Alumnus Leaves Gift to Forestry School
Distinguished alumnus of the College of Forestry and Conservation at The University of Montana Charles E. "Mike" Hardy left bequests to three local forestry groups after he passed away this past June. Read more

Native Children's Trauma Center Receives $2.4 Million Grant
The National Native Children's Trauma Center based at UM received a $2.4 million grant to continue work with Native American youth who experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
The grant is a competitive refunding of the center from the Substance Abuse and Mental Services Health Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Though the center is based in the UM College of Education's Institute for Educational Research and Service, it provides trainings nationwide on mental health services that are particularly effective in rural settings and schools. The new award will expand the trainings to include Indian Health Services clinicians, tribal health departments, child welfare agencies and reservation schools.
IERS Director Rick van den Pol said the grant will provide training for professionals who serve Native youth through the center's outreach programs and through partnerships with tribes. Read more

Lumberjacks Spoil UM Homecoming,
Griz Head to Cheney this Weekend
A couple of our more well-known and popular cliches are "streaks are meant to be broken," and sometimes that goes for hearts too.
Both of those things took place Saturday afternoon in UM's Washington-Grizzly Stadium, as the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks defeated the Grizzlies 41-31 in UM's annual Homecoming Game and the teams' 2012 Big Sky Conference opener. Read more
The Grizzlies are on the road this Saturday, Sept. 29, playing the Eastern Washington Eagles in a Big Sky Conference game in EWU's Roos Field. Kickoff is at 5:15 p.m. MST. Read more

Soccer Team Records One Tie, One Win
Facing a late 1-0 deficit in its Big Sky Conference opener, the Griz soccer team got a goal from sophomore Paytyn Wheeler in the 89th minute to force overtime, and Montana and Idaho State played to a 1-1 draw before a crowd of nearly 400 at South Campus Stadium on Sept. 21. Read more
Senior Lauren Costa headed in a corner kick by junior Mary Makris in the 17th minute and it stood up as the game-winner as the Montana soccer team defeated Weber State 1-0 in a Sept. 23 match at home. Read more
The team will play its first Big Sky Conference road matches at Portland State and Sacramento State. Read more

Griz Spikers Earn Big Sky Win, Look to Maintain Momentum on Road
One year after Portland State rallied back from a fifth-set deficit to beat the Montana volleyball team at the West Auxiliary Gym, the Vikings did it again Sept. 21. Read more
The next day, the Griz collected its first Big Sky Conference victory of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Eastern Washington on Sept. 22 at the West Auxiliary Gym, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17. The win also snapped the Grizzlies' four-match losing streak. Read more
The team will conclude its four-match homestand this weekend when it hosts Weber State and Idaho State at the West Auxiliary Gym. The Grizzlies will host the Wildcats on Friday, Sept. 28, and the Bengals on Saturday, Sept. 29. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. Read more
