Event to Spotlight UM Research Efforts

UM brims with researchers trying to advance human knowledge and puzzle out the mysteries presented to us by the natural world.

To highlight some of the great science being conducted here in western Montana, the University will host a first-ever "UM Research Spotlight" from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the University Center Theater. The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a social.

"We are trying a novel approach with this presentation," said David Forbes, UM's interim vice president for research and creative scholarship. "The researchers on our panels will each show a few slides, with everyone commenting on what's presented. We'll do it in a way that's understandable and accessible to everyone, and we hope to get interaction with the audience." Read more

Biological Station to Receive First Proceeds from Map Fundraiser

Flathead Lake map Missoula-based Xplorer Maps will present UM's Flathead Lake Biological Station and the Flathead Lakers with the first installment of fundraising proceeds from sales of its antique-style map of Flathead Lake at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the FLBS.

The company has sold about half of the 300 signed, limited-edition prints of the map, which was released over the summer to raise money and awareness for continued monitoring, research and protection of Flathead Lake.

Greg Robitaille, co-owner of Xplorer Maps, will present a check in support of programs run by the station and the Lakers. The FLBS will use its portion of the donation as a matching contribution to the ongoing Flathead Lake Monitoring Challenge Grant. Xplorer Maps agreed to donate $20,000 of the revenue generated by the map to the FLBS and the Lakers. Read more

Program Receives $2 Million Grant For Bird Research in Asia

Martin_birdTom Martin believes his upcoming research on two superfamilies of birds in southeast Asia will have a major impact on science's understanding of how species form, how physiology may influence longevity and the implications of climate change on their development and survival.

The National Science Foundation sees potential in the research, too, because the Montana Wildlife Cooperative Research Unit senior scientist and UM professor, together with four other scientists, recently received a $2 million grant from the organization to pursue the study.

Martin leads the study titled "Dimensions: Collaborative Research - Historical And Contemporary Influences on Elevational Distributions and Biodiversity Tested in Tropic Asia" with partners from the Smithsonian Institution, the University of Kansas and Louisiana State University. A large sum of the NSF grant, $1.3 million, will come to UM for the study, and Martin will lead a group of student researchers to the tropical island Borneo to study birds in the Sylvoidea and Muscicapidae families.
