Where's Your Classroom? Online. Abroad. In the field.

We're inviting you to show us where your classroom is - outside the four walls of a traditional face-to-face course. It's your opportunity to share your experience, flex your creative muscles, and enter to win up to $500!

Submissions are no longer being accepted. Please see the prize and eligibility details below for information about how to win by voting.

How do I enter?

Simply send us a photo or video that shows a nontraditional classroom (online, abroad, in the field, etc.) by October 25.

Photo of a female student on her laptop at the beach, a male student in front of sand dunes, and a female student reading a book in a foreign city

Detailed rules for submission follow:

  • All submissions must be the original work of the entrant.
  • Submissions may not contain vulgar language or images. (In other words, if your mother would be embarrassed to see it, you probably shouldn't submit it.) XLS reserves the right to refuse a submission.
  • All submissions must have a title (keep it short and sweet).
  • Entrants may submit up to 3 videos and up to 3 photos.
  • Videos may not be longer than 30 seconds.
  • Videos must be uploaded to YouTube. The URL to the video must then be e-mailed to xls@umontana.edu.
  • Photos must be in .jpg format (400px wide), and e-mailed to xls@umontana.edu.
  • All submissions must be submitted (via e-mail, as above) no later than 11:59 p.m. (Mountain) on Sunday, October 25, 2009.

By submitting an entry:

  • You give consent to XLS to use your photo or video for future marketing.
  • You guarantee that others in your photo or video have given consent to be in the photo/video and have given consent for XLS to use the photo/video for future marketing.
  • You acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to the above rules.

What can I win?

The prize is a University of Montana tuition or fee waiver of up to $500. The waiver may be used for Wintersession 2010 or Spring Semester 2010. See eligibility rules.

How are the winners determined?

Beginning October 28, photos and videos will be posted online for voting. Anyone can vote, up to once each day, until voting closes at noon on November 16. Three winners will be announced:

  • The top two submission 'vote-getters'
  • A voter, chosen at random

* Originally, this was the top photo submission and top video submission. Since there were no video submissions, two of the tuition/fee waivers will be awarded to the top two submissions.

Who is eligible to submit, vote, and win?

Anyone may submit a video or photo (through October 25), and anyone may vote (up to once each day while voting is open). Only University of Montana students/staff/faculty with a valid 790 number are eligible to win. A winner must be registered for and attend at least one Wintersession course or one Spring Semester 2010 course to receive the University of Montana tuition or fee waiver.
