Developing an online course is an intensive and rewarding process that takes a willingness to reconsider instructional practices. In order to assist faculty adequately prepare, UMOnline requires participation in an ongoing process of course development and review.
Once the academic department has made the decision to offer a course online and has conferred with the XLS Director, an online course development proposal is submitted via Maven. A final decision on acceptance will be made within two to three weeks of the proposal submission deadline. Faculty begin the course development process on approval of the course development proposal. Due to the demands of the course development process, proposals should be submitted at least one semester prior to their start. Semester deadlines are listed below:

The course development process utilizes a blended mode of delivery and includes face-to-face, synchronous, and asynchronous sessions. Key components of the development process are a 6-week online course, technical training in Blackboard, a peer review process, 1:1 or small group consultations, and final review by the instructional design team.
From time to time, it may be necessary to significantly update an online course. Support for redevelopment efforts is provided in those instances where the course was originally developed by someone else.
