The Crown of the Continent, where geography is cast on a colossal scale, holds several precious jewels. Among them Glacier National Park, our classroom and territory of exploration for this four day journey of discovery.
Our gathering place in this majestic terrain is the Glacier Institute Field Camp, an assortment of rustic cabins near West Glacier on the east bank of McDonald Creek.
Glacier Park is the destination, as it holds some of the most exquisite mountain landscape in North America. It is also one of the finest places on the planet to study wildlife habitat, Native American history, the many aspects of an altering world climate, fascinating physical geography, and a collection of the work glaciers are capable of accomplishing.
Our field time will be spent at two locations on the Continental Divide: within the thick stately forests of the McDonald Valley and in the legendary North Fork of the Flathead River country. We will seek out the best views and allow time for a bit of “extra curricular” photography instruction.
With University of Montana professor Rick Graetz and scientists from the Glacier Institute, we will:

When you leave Glacier on Monday morning you’ll be packing with you a solid knowledge of many colorful and intriguing aspects of perhaps North America’s most intact and pristine ecosystem. Gaining an understanding of the Crown of the Continent geography will enable you to appreciate and interpret other mountain landscapes, whether they are in the Northern Rockies or any other range you might visit. The photographs you take and the course pack you receive will serve as your “external hard drive” backup for your memories!
