Personal Summary

Dr. Udo Fluck, is a German-born intercultural researcher and curriculum developer with over 20 years of teaching and training experience. He has developed and directed innovative intercultural and global competence-building programs at the University of Montana between 2004 and 2016. He is also a keynote speaker, consultant, podcaster, author and founder of the consulting company IGCTC.

Fluck has a successful track-record of developing and directing academic programs and serving in numerous leadership positions in academia. His instructional approach has received numerous awards, one of which a national research award. Fluck maintains an active, internationally recognized research portfolio, focusing on developing cultural and global competence in participants.

In 2014, Fluck developed an educational outreach program for K-12, the Global and Cultural Competence (GCC) program, offering intercultural and global-competence building seminars in elementary, middle, and high schools in the Missoula School District. The outreach program expanded significantly in 2018 and in 2022, provided seminars in 15 schools, across 4 school districts.

The GCC program, developed in Missoula, is the only one of its kind in the United States, in regard to breadth, offering seminars to students in 3rd, 7th and 11th grade, as well as its unique pedagogical approach. It gained international attention and interest through conference presentations in Canada and New Zealand in 2019. In 2021, the Department of Education in the Ministry of Culture, in Hessen, Germany, invited Fluck to develop and teach professional seminars for German teachers, as well as school administrators in 2022.

Fluck was also the senior curriculum developer for the National Science Foundation’s Resilience through Intercultural Skill Enhancement (RISE), housed at the Salish Kootenai College campus on the Flathead Reservation. Born and raised in Wiesbaden, Germany, Fluck came to Missoula in 1989 for his undergraduate and graduate education. He holds degrees in journalism, media management, instructional design and technology, as well as in multicultural education. Udo has been an invited and plenary speaker at over 35 national and international conferences and has presented over 1,600 documented cultural awareness seminars to date.

Conference Presentations

Fluck maintains a vibrant and active, nationally recognized research portfolio and cultural competency-building program. He has authored and co-authored peer reviewed manuscripts in discipline related journals and has been an invited speaker at over 35 national and international conferences, symposia, and colloquia, sharing his research results and pedagogical approaches of the past two decades. In fall 2019, he provided the keynote presentation titled: Collaboration Through Intercultural Communication, at the New Zealand Sister Cities Conference in Palmerston North, New Zealand, as well as a presentation titled: Citizen Diplomacy and Sister Cities, at the 2019 AFS Global Conference in Montreal, Canada.

Since 2004, as a faculty member at large, Fluck developed and taught cross-cultural and global competence courses and seminars in various colleges, schools and institutes at the University of Montana, including the College of Education and Human Sciences, the College of Forestry and Conservation, the College of Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences, the College of Humanities and Sciences, the Davidson Honors College, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. In addition, he has developed and offered a cultural adaptation seminar series for UM's Global Engagement, (pre-departure seminars for UM students enrolled in a study abroad program, as well as for international students arriving at UM) and for students in the UM's Criminology Club.

Fluck hosts the World View Film Series (4 international films in spring and in fall) and a monthly podcast titled International Voices with Udo Fluck.

About World View Film Series

In fall 2018, Arts Missoula GLOBAL, in collaboration with The Roxy Theater, inaugurated the World View Film Series, which screens four international movies (either foreign productions or with a focus on a country abroad) in the fall and four in the spring of each year. The film series provides a “Window to the World” for Missoula that is FREE and open to the public!

About International Voices

In Spring 2020, the International Voices podcast was inaugurated. It is part of Arts Missoula GLOBAL’s Community programming aimed at educating and informing local audiences in the Northern Rocky Mountains of Montana with guest speakers discussing current, upcoming, and established international programming, events, activities, and collaborations about “all things cultural and global.”

Publications

Since the mid-90’s, Fluck has been the author, co-author and presenter of numerous research studies and presenter at national and international conferences in the fields of business and education. As a published lead-author, his research results in pedagogy, instructional design and course content development have been published in established peer–reviewed academic journals, such as the Journal of Global Business and the Journal of Teaching in International Business. In addition, he has been the invited first author for a chapter in nationwide publication titled: International Students Strengthening a Critical Resource, endorsed by the American Council on Education. While he has presented and published primarily as a lead author, Fluck has also collaborated with colleagues and researchers from his Alma Mater, as well as from other US universities on scholarly articles.

Professional Experience

Between 2004 and 2016, while at the University of Montana, Fluck founded, developed, and oversaw the largest multicultural and global training office, providing courses and seminars for students, faculty, and staff across UM’s campus. This includes a range of courses, from 100-level undergraduate to 600-level graduate-level seminars, on topics related to cross-cultural management, intercultural and international education and educational leadership.

In 2014, Fluck developed an educational outreach program for K-12, offering intercultural and global-competence building seminars in elementary, middle, and high schools in the Missoula School District. The outreach program expanded significantly in 2018 and in 2022, Fluck provided over 300 seminars in 15 schools, across 4 Montana school districts.

In 2016, he founded Intercultural and Global Competence Training and Consulting (IGCTC), an LLC based in Missoula, developing and providing seminars for business professionals, companies and non-profit organizations in Missoula and across the State of Montana.

Since 2018, Dr. Fluck is also the curriculum designer and instructor for the National Science Foundation’s Resilience through Intercultural Skill Enhancement (RISE), housed at the Salish Kootenai College campus on the Flathead Reservation, in Montana, USA. RISE is an intercultural educational series originally developed for Native American students.

In 2018, he inaugurated Global and Cultural Affairs for Missoula’s designated arts and culture agency. In spring of 2022, Global and Cultural Affairs was rebranded to Arts Missoula GLOBAL.

Dr. Fluck oversees the four branches of the program. Global and cultural competence seminars for Students and Teachers in K-12, Management of Sister City Partnerships, cultural programming for the Missoula Community, including the monthly International Voices Podcasts and the World View Film Series and global and cultural awareness trainings for City and County Employees.

International Experience

Fluck has traveled in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, England, Belgium, Holland, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, and of course the U.S.
