Institutional Compliance

UM, like all college and university campuses, is subject to an extraordinary number and wide variety of laws, regulations, and policies that affect nearly every aspect of life, work, and research for our community. UM’s commitment to compliance, therefore, is integral to fulfilling its vision, mission, and priorities for action.

UM’s Institutional Compliance Program uses a flexible Framework which encourages and supports compliance efforts across campus. Flexibility is key and relates to inherent demands, risks and needs within each Compliance Issue Area. The Framework articulates five flexible elements necessary for the establishment and maintenance of an effective compliance program:

  1. High Level Oversight
  2. Standards, Policies and Procedures
  3. Communication, Education and Training
  4. Monitoring and Mitigation
  5. Reporting, Response, and Culture of Accountability

Programs of Compliance

UM’s Institutional Compliance Program encompasses ten Programs of Compliance:

  • Accreditation
  • Advancement
  • Athletics
  • Business Operations
  • Campus Safety and Health
  • Civil Rights
  • Financial Aid
  • Privacy
