UM COVID Communication

The UM COVID Communication logo

Dear Employees and Students,

Today, Missoula City-County Public Health Officer Ellen Leahy signed an order changing the face coverings (mask) rule for Missoula County from a requirement to a recommendation, as the county has met the requirement of at least 60% of Missoula County residents ages 16 and older having received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Additionally, new case incidence has not trended above 25 new cases daily per 100,000 population on a seven-day rolling average.

The Montana University System mask mandate will be reconsidered by the Board of Regents at its May 26-27 meeting. Currently, the Montana University System mask requirement and UM’s mask policy remain in effect.

UM’s mask mandate states:

In order to help ensure the health and safety of the University of Montana (UM) community and the public, unless specifically exempted as outlined in the Procedures, all University employees, students, contractors, vendors and visitors must wear face coverings on site at a University location and off-site in all University programs and activities in:

  • Indoor spaces.
  • Enclosed or partially enclosed outdoor spaces.
  • Outdoor settings when people are unable to keep a six-foot distance at all times.
  • University-owned vehicles when more than one person is in a vehicle, including but not limited to ASUM buses and vans.

This policy is in full effect until otherwise communicated.

If there is a change to this policy, we will communicate broadly to the campus and modify signage, websites and other guidance as needed.
