Student Law Enforcement Academy

About the SLEA

The Office of Public Safety has found that education has been most effective in gaining understanding and support from the community. The Student Law Enforcement Academy offers students insights into how campus police officers perform their duties and how the department serves the community.

Goals

  • Encourage increased understanding of police operations.
  • Enhance awareness of the Department's capabilities
  • Develop realistic expectations of Emergency response.
  • Bridge the gap between the Department and the community by building trust, loyalty, and a sense of cooperation.
  • Provide a forum for police–student exchange and dialogue.

Course Description

Instruction is comprised of a 1-hour class each week for six weeks. Each class will be part instruction and part practicum. Certified police officers, supervisors, and civilian instructors with particular expertise conduct each topic. Classes are free and capped at 24 student attendees.

  • Narcotics/VICE Investigations
  • Crime Scene Processing
  • Family Abuse/Juvenile Procedures
  • Defensive Tactics
  • Firearms Training

Additional Details

Any student attending the University of Montana may attend the Academy. 

The SLEA is held once a semester in the spring, normally in March. Exact date and time will be posted on our FB page as well.Classes are usually on Thursdays at 5:30pm in room 352 in the Social Science Building. This course is about 6 weeks with a break during Spring Break. Attendance is required. Certificates are handed out upon completion.
