K-12 Teacher Librarian Endorsement

Your fully online, affordable, and essential K-12 teacher librarian endorsement

A teacher librarian, often called a school library media specialist, has many roles including teacher, instructional partner, information specialist, and program administrator. Through these roles, a teacher librarian provides access to information, instruction in information skills, and recommendations for instructional planning. They are an integral part of every educational community.

The mission of the K-12 Teacher Librarian program is to produce high-caliber teacher librarians and media/information technology specialists who will comfortably fill all of the roles in the library and to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished by:

  • Providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats;
  • Providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information/ideas;
  • Working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students.

Two tracks are available for a Library Media endorsement:

This program is now offered jointly by the Department of Teaching and Learning in the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education at the University of Montana and the Lucy Carson Library at the University of Montana - Western.
