The Systems Ecology Intercollegiate Graduate Program is comprised of a collective group of faculty from across campus who advise and guide students accepted to the Systems Ecology graduate program. Faculty come from across campus,  ranging from the W.A. Franke College of Forestry, the Division of Biological Sciences, The School of Business, School of Journalism,  Departments of Environmental Science, Geography, Economics. University faculty apply to become part of the Systems Ecology faculty, and are accepted based on their topical area of research and teaching relevant to systems ecology, and scholarly performance. Personal Summary

James Elser is Bierman Professor of Ecology of the University of Montana and since March 2016 has been Director of UM’s Flathead Lake Biological Station at Yellow Bay.  He also holds a part-time research faculty position in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University. Trained as a limnologist, Dr Elser is best known for his work in developing and testing the theory of ecological stoichiometry, the study of the balance of energy and multiple chemical elements in ecological systems.  Currently, Dr Elser's research focuses most intensively on Flathead Lake as well as mountain lakes of western Montana and western China. Previous field sites have included the Experimental Lakes Area in Ontario, Canada; lakes of the Arctic and of Patagonia; grasslands of Inner Mongolia; and desert springs in Mexico's Chihuahuan Desert.  From 2012-2017 he served as leader of the NSF-funded Phosphorus Sustainability Research Coordination Network and currently is the director of the Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance, a member organization designed to facilitate the implementation of P sustainability solutions in North America.  In recognition of his research accomplishments, in 2019 Dr Elser was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences.  He also has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) as well as a foreign member of the Norwegian Academy of Arts and Sciences.  In 2012 Dr Elser received the G.E. Hutchinson Medal of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), the world's largest scientific association dedicated to aquatic sciences.  During 2014-2016 he served as ASLO’s President.  Dr Elser holds a PhD from the University of California (Davis), an MS degree from the University of Tennessee, and a BS degree from the University of Notre Dame.

Research Interests

James Elser investigates the theory of biological stoichiometry the study of the balance of energy and multiple chemical elements in living systems. He and his international team of collaborators seek to understand how the coupling of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus shapes the ecology and evolution of living things.  To do so, Elser and colleagues work with a diversity of ecosystems (from lakes and deserts, to hot springs and grasslands), biota (plankton to insects, and pandas to tumors), and approaches (laboratory chemostats, field experiments and mathematical models).  As director of the Flathead Lake Biological Station, this work now heavily features work in mountain lakes in western Montana but also mountain lakes in other regions, such as Qinghai (China) and Patagonia (Argentina).

Elser played a major role in establishing ASU's Sustainable Phosphorus Initiative and is now the lead investigator for an NSF Research Coordination Network on Phosphorus Sustainability. Through these efforts, he seeks to help create a sustainable food system by closing the human P cycle.
