Program Faculty

The Systems Ecology Intercollegiate Graduate Program is comprised of a collective group of faculty from across campus who advise and guide students accepted to the Systems Ecology graduate program. Faculty come from across campus,  ranging from the W.A. Franke College of Forestry, the Division of Biological Sciences, The School of Business, School of Journalism,  Departments of Environmental Science, Geography, Economics. University faculty apply to become part of the Systems Ecology faculty, and are accepted based on their topical area of research and teaching relevant to systems ecology, and scholarly performance. Personal Summary

Following the receipt of my BS in Zoology from Michigan State University, I attended Wayne State Law School and then practiced law in Manistee, Michigan. Some nine years later, I returned to academics at the University of Oregon to gain my PhD in Biology. I was fortunate to secure a faculty position in the Environmental Studies Program in 1994. For 28 years I taught conservation biology; environmental science; environmental law and policy; and strategies to make positive change happen. I worked with undergraduate students and mentored over 200 master's degree students to completion, many of whom have gone on to work in environment, sustainability and conservation in government, industry and non-profits. The ability to support and grow these students has been one of the highlights of my career.

My work has included several international efforts. I initiated a unique transboundary effort to bring students and faculty from University of Montana, University of Calgary and ultimately Mount Royal University together to study conservation and natural area management in the Crown of the Continent region spanning Montana, British Columbia and Alberta. Under the leadership of the Mansfield Center I co-developed and directed Study of the United States Institutes and Young Southeast Asian Leaders Institutes from 2010 to present. I have been fortunate to travel overseas to facilitate workshops for these amazing young people in India, Singapore and Cambodia, supporting their efforts to launch government and civil society efforts to address pressing environmental and social issues of their home regions. Together with a Fulbright Specialist tour in Laos, working with a local non-profit association and working Myanmar to offer ideas and strategies to support sustainability these experiences have been enlightening, humbling and empowering, re-energizing my teaching, work and confidence that people can make a positive difference.

I retired from teaching in May 2022, but have been granted Emeritus status and continue to support the efforts of the Mansfield Center, the Wyss Scholars for US Conservation and graduate students in the Environmental Studies Program.

Research Interests

Conservation Biology: My interests in the field of conservation biology include transboundary conservation planning and connectivity preservation and restoration. I am also interested in the mapping of biodiversity and the threats to its preservation, especially to support reserve planning and design. I have recently had graduate students working on evaluation of the efficacy of wildlife crossing structures, avian ecology, and enduring features analysis to name a few.

Environmental Law and Policy: An active part of my work is studying how citizens can influence the policy process and environmental outcomes to protect the environment and the human communities that depend on it. I have played a part in environmental policy debates ranging from local land use planning to wilderness designation to wildland conservation to species conservation particularly grizzly bears. Recent graduate students have worked on projects to understand the integration of collaboration into agency practice, the implications of the new US Forest Service planning regulations on connectivity and the status of inventoried roadless area protection in Montana under the Roadless Rule.

Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: I am interested in how we can mitigate and adapt to climate change through individual and collective choices and policy initiatives. Attending the Paris Climate Change meetings as a credentialed observer was an incredible opportunity. I am currently working on an analysis of snowpack accumulation and retention in the watersheds of the Crown of the Continent for use in climate change adaptation planning for the Crown Managers Partnership . I have also led a number of projects using renewable energy. A current graduate student working under my supervision is working on completing an analysis of factors influencing the successful implementation of distributed renewable energy micro-grids in the developing world.
