Why A Degree In Neuroscience?

Neuroscience encompasses the interdisciplinary study of the nervous system and brain.  It is a field of study at the forefront of biomedical research and is among the fastest growing health science majors on campuses across the country.  The UM Neuroscience Major provides a pathway for students to learn the structure and function of the brain, as well as the causes, treatments, and prevention of neurological and mental disorders.  Importantly, neuroscience students at UM are able to choose between two degree options, the Cognitive & Behavioral Neuroscience and Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience tracks, based on their interests and long-term goals.

Coursework in both options includes a critical focus on research approaches and methods, as well as scientific writing.  Consistent with its interdisciplinary nature, courses are taught by neuroscience faculty affiliated with multiple colleges and departments across the UM campus.  A Neuroscience degree from UM will empower students to pursue post-graduate training in the biomedical and health sciences (M.D., Ph.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., Pharm.D., P.A.) or enter into a wide array of careers paths (biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors, science writing, law) in which scientific knowledge of the brain are key components.
