Segal AmeriCorps Education Award
The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is a post-service benefit received by participants who complete a term of national service in an approved AmeriCorps program--AmeriCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps NCCC, or AmeriCorps State and National.
The education award may be used to pay educational costs at eligible post-secondary educational institutions (including many technical schools and GI-Bill approved educational programs), as well as to repay qualified student loans.
Since its inception in 1994, the University of Montana system has received payments exceeding $4,000,000 on behalf of nearly 1,700 AmeriCorps alum.
Launching in 2015, the University of Montana will match up to $1,000 annually, of the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award voucher that is awarded to AmeriCorps members who completed a term of national service. Q: I want to use my AmeriCorps Segal education award to pay my UM tuition. What do I need to do to apply UM’s $1,000 match?
A: Contact the UM Financial Aid Office and/or the UM Business Office prior to paying your bill and using your Segal AmeriCorps Education award. You will be advised about how to best use your award and utilize the match to your benefit. Failure to work with a UM Financial Aid representative could potentially result in decreased aid and/or grant eligibility.
Q: Which scholarships would make me ineligible for the match?

Q: I am a Missoula College/Bitterroot College student. Am I eligible for the match?
A: Yes, Missoula College and Bitterroot College students are eligible.
Q: If I am using my Segal Education Award to pay for both fall and spring tuition, can I apply the match to both semesters?
A: Yes, the match may be applied to any semester, but may not exceed $1,000 annually. Therefore $500.00 for autumn and $500.00 for spring is possible.
Q: I am taking online classes through the School of Extended and Lifelong Learning (SELL). Can I apply the match to these courses?
A: Online distance students are eligible for the AmeriCorps voucher, but SELL-specific courses, such as continuing education courses or self-support courses, are not eligible when calculating what the UM will match.
