Joseph S. Carlson won $4500 for a 13-week program in India. He is a junior majoring in Exercise Science with a Global Public Health minor and is also involved in the Franke Global Leadership Initiative. Following graduation, Carlson plans to attend Palmer College of Chiropractic in California and also obtain a Physical Therapy certification.

For his Gilman program, Carlson will be working with the Center for Social Medicine (CSM) in Loni, Maharashtra, India, which hosts a post-graduate level physiotherapy school, a medical teaching hospital, rural health clinics, mobile medical and dental clinics, community public health outreach initiatives, and traditional medicinal practices called Ayurveda. At CSM, Carlson says, “I will be involved in a variety of community wellness and personal health practices, and then I will be focusing more on the Physiotherapy and Ayurvedic disciplines. This award benefited me greatly by providing me the funding to make this internship possible. It has helped me to pay for airfare, which can be easily upwards of $2000 to get to and from India, housing costs, food, supplies, and general needs associated with the internship.”
