To be considered for any of these UM or UM affiliated scholarships a student needs to complete a separate application process with the corresponding department or agency.

Scholarship Details

Students interested in becoming a student-athlete at the University of Montana should contact the Athletic Department.

The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Native American Scholarship shall provide at least two scholarships each year for deserving female Native American students, at the undergraduate level, and who are from any of the seven Indian reservations within the State of Montana.  Eligible applicants must be full-time and have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) (current unofficial copy of transcript must be included with application). The scholarships shall be available to students who wish to attend one of the four University of Montana campuses.

Must be from: Blackfeet, Rocky Boy, Flathead, Crow, Fort Belknap, Fort Peck, or Northern Cheyenne Reservation.

Must be planning to attend one of the following campuses for the upcoming academic year.

  • UM - Missoula/Missoula College
  • UM - Western
  • Montana Tech
  • UM - Helena College

Four year, renewable award

The University of Montana participates in the National Merit Scholarship Program and offers awards of $2,000 a year to finalists who have indicated UM as their first choice for attending college. Semi-finalists who enroll at UM will receive an award of $1,000 a year. Awards under this program may be held in addition to the Presidential Leadership Scholarship, a UM General Scholarship and Departmental Scholarships.


Students must be a National Merit Scholarship Finalists or Semi-finalists as determined by PSAT Test taken junior year in high school. A copy of the official letter showing National Merit status must be submitted to the UM Financial Aid Office.


Four year, renewable award

The Horatio Alger Montana Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to eligible high school seniors in the state of Montana who aspire to pursue higher education at the University of Montana.

This scholarship will be awarded according to the terms set by the Horatio Alger Association.

Eligibility and Application Procedure:

Recipients must meet all eligibility requirements and demonstrate critical financial need, plus be planning to attend one of the University of Montana's campuses.

The University of Montana will match up to $1,000 annually, of the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award (Ed Award) voucher that is awarded to AmeriCorps members who completed a term of national service.

The $1,000 match may not exceed the cost of UM tuition and may not be combined with any other UM scholarships. “UM Scholarships”, include, but are not limited to the non-resident Leadership, Achievement and Service Scholarship (LAS), The resident Montana Academic Achievement Scholarship (MAA), the Western Undergraduate Exchange Scholarship (WUE), scholarships administered by the Foundation or Sponsored Programs, any state funded tuition waiver or UM funded RA or TA position.

The AmeriCorps Education Award may be used to assist qualifying students with educational expenses at the University. The total funding from AmeriCorps plus the University’s matching scholarship may not exceed each individual student’s total cost of attendance.

Students must be admitted as degree seeking students. If they are taking continuing education courses that are defined as “self-support” courses through the School of Extended and Lifelong Learning (SELL) they are not eligible to receive the matching contribution from the University of Montana.

To qualify to receive the matching scholarship, students must request the payment from AmeriCorps on or before the 15th day of classes for autumn and spring semesters. The deadline for summer is the 5th class day of the specific summer session.
