WELCOME To University of Montana GEAR UP  First Year Services

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is essential not only in high school but during the collegiate experience.  Our goal is to help students. You are prepared.  You are ready.  UM GEAR UP is here to guide Montana GEAR UP high school students and their families, academically, socially, and financially through their first year at the University of Montana.  The transition from high school to college can be overwhelming and we want to make sure you feel confident with each milestone along the way.

FIRST YEAR STUDENT SERVICES

  • We offer a Peer Mentor Program that provides a welcoming and supportive environment to new students and an extended network of additional resources and information.
  • Academic coaches who are ready and willing to answer question or help with academic progress. 
  • Monthly newsletter filled with tips and tricks, resources, to help you connect with campus and classmates.
  • Collaborative events and activities to be informed by a variety of resources.
  • Wealth of resources at your fingertips:
    • Financial Education- Helps navigate the costs of college and FAFSA completion
    • Study Jam- Tutoring Program 
    • TRIO- Free student support services for University of Montana students who apply and are eligible. Academic advising, career and major exploration, financial literacy, tutoring, mentoring and academic success coaching, scholarships, and textbook and technology loans.
    • Curry Health Center- Offers medical, dental, counseling, and wellness services.
    • Office of Disability Equity- If you need help with various types of accommodations and/or services.
    • Experiential Learning and Career Success- They can help you prepare for your career. Check out ElevateU- a special program to develop career-ready skills over time at the University of Montana.
    • Writing and Public Speaking Center- Help from the start with what to say, how to say it, and then presenting it.
    • Undergraduate Advising- Not sure who your advisor is? No worries. They can help you design and track your academic progress.

Open registration for Autumn 2023 continues on CyberBear through the 7th class day.

Autumn 2022 classes begin.

Class waitlists expire.

Sept. 1, 2023

Residency reclassification requests for Autumn 2023 due, though they can be accepted up to the 15th class day.  Earlier submission is encouraged to allow time for review and correction or to turn in missing documents. Residency reclassifications may affect tuition and fee assessment.

Sept. 6, 2023 (5 p.m.)

Class Day 7:

Last day for students to add classes via CyberBear without consent of instructor.

Sept. 7-18, 2023

Instructors must approve all class adds via electronic override on CyberBear.

Sept. 18, 2023 (before 5 p.m.)

Class Day 15:

  • Last day to drop individual classes on CyberBear with refund
  • Last day to withdraw from (drop all courses) with a partial refund – Withdrawal Policy linked below.
  • Last day to add classes with electronic override on CyberBear.
  • Last day to change credits in variable credit courses & switch grade mode in CyberBear without instructor's consent.
  • Last day to change grading option to or from audit.
  • Last day to buy or refuse UM’s student health insurance coverage.

Sept. 19, 2023 (after 5 p.m.)

Any student not registered for at least one course (on schedule in CyberBear) must submit a Request to Late Register. Requests are not guaranteed approval.

Sept. 29–Oct. 30, 2023 (5 p.m.)

Through Class Day 45:

  • Course adds & drops require instructor’s & advisor’s approval using the Course Add/Change/Drop link in CyberBear.  $10 fee applies per add or drop.
  • A ‘W’ will appear on the transcript for dropped classes.  No refunds.
  • Students can change variable credit amounts and grading options (except audit) on eligible courses using the Course Add/Change/Drop link in CyberBear.

Oct. 9, 2023

Spring 2024 advising for priority registration begins.

Oct. 30-Nov. 13, 2023

Spring 2024 priority registration begins for continuing students according to class standing. See priority registration page for the registration timetable. Advising pin required for undergraduate students. NOTE: Priority registration period expanded to 2 1/2 weeks.

Oct. 31 –Dec. 8, 2023 (5 p.m.)

After Class Day 45:

  • Adds require instructor’s and advisor’s approval using the Course Add/Change/Drop link.  $10 fee applies.
  • Drops require instructor’s, advisor’s, and Dean’s approval via Course Add/Change/Drop link. $10 fee applies.
  • A ‘WP’ or ‘WF’ will appear on the transcript for dropped classes. No refunds.

Dec. 8, 2023

  • We highly recommend you read the full University of Montana Withdrawal Policy and speak with your advisor before you initiate a semester withdrawal.
  • Withdrawal definition: Withdrawing from ALL courses in a semester.
  • Cyberbear does not allow for semester withdrawals; instead, the student must contact the withdrawal coordinator and complete a Semester Withdrawal form.
  • Withdrawal forms must be RECEIVED by 5:00 p.m. on the deadline dates listed below to receive a refund of tuition & fees.
