Students: Register Your Travel

Important Announcement about International Travel!

After careful consideration of travel advisories from the CDC and U.S. Department of State, available data on the global pandemic, emerging variants of the COVID-19 virus around the world, challenges with the vaccination rollout, and international travel restrictions, all UM sponsored travel outside the U.S. by faculty, students, and staff will remain suspended through July 31, 2021. The UM International Travel Review Committee will reconvene early May 2021 to discuss UM sponsored travel beyond July 2021. Graduate student travel will rarely be eligible for an exception. Undergraduate students are ineligible to apply for an exception.

University of Montana recognizes the importance of life-changing international experiences and the vaccine provides hope that the university community can soon take advantage of these opportunities again.

NOTE:  Native students, faculty & staff who have reserves on both sides of the US/Canadian border (individuals covered under Jay's Treaty) are exempt from the international travel suspension for travel to Canada.

International Travel Registry

The University of Montana provides a secure system for faculty, staff and students to record travel plans and contact information. The registry is a convenient one-stop service that supports emergency communications access and helps to ensure that travelers have adequate medical and emergency evacuation and repatriation insurance coverage.

Who is required to register travel?

  • All UM faculty, staff and students traveling abroad for university-related purposes. (See UM International Travel Policy).
  •  Native students who have reserves on both sides of the border (individuals covered under Jay’s Treaty) shall be exempt from the Travel Registry requirement when traveling to Canada.
  • Travels should be registered 30 days prior to departure. If last-minute travel is required due to unforeseeable and uncontrollable circumstances (e.g. research projects that must be attended to on short notice) where the need to travel arises unexpectedly and quickly and it is not possible to register travel 30 days in advance, the traveler should register as soon as possible in order to allow time for enrollment in the required insurance policy.  Any travel to High Risk Countries Subject to Travel Advisories or Health Notices, must be registered at least 30 days in advance to allow time for review by the International Travel Review Committee.
  • Travelers can update their registration by logging in to their existing registration from the link above.

What are the benefits of the Travel Registry?

  • Emergency Communications: Your travel registration enables UM to reach you in the event of an emergency. The travel registry is the University’s official means for sharing urgent health, safety and security-related information.

What do I need to know before I start my travel registration?

  • Documents needed:

Travelers should upload the biographical page of their passport and a copy of their insurance card as part of travel registration. Individuals enrolled in the GeoBlue Worldwide Health Insurance for Higher Education policy through UM do not need to upload their insurance card.
