Students...

ISEP Network:

Student...

  • Can choose from 140 universities in 50 countries
  • Must complete UM education abroad application, ISEP application, and host institution requirements
  • Participates in mandatory, one-credit Pre-Departure Orientation
  • Works closely with UM Education Abroad staff and ISEP Central Office for program preparation and completion before, during and after education abroad experience

Main benefits:

  • Guaranteed housing through exchange option
  • Flexible housing arrangements through direct option
  • Students can go to a location not offered through partner network
  • Returnee alumni network and student ambassador programs

Faculty-Directed Programs:

Student...

  • Will fully immerse into one location, language, culture, or learning content
  • Must complete UM education abroad application and any faculty leader requirements
  • Participates in single-day, mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation workshop
  • Works closely with UM Education Abroad staff and faculty director for program preparation and completion before, during and after education abroad experience

Main benefits:

  • One application fee
  • Short-term programs for students who cannot be away for a semester or full-year
  • Great ways to start out or spend summer or winter sessions
  • Great for group-oriented individuals who prefer to travel with others
  • Pre-designed agenda and pre-organized group outings

Should I go the Exchange or Direct route?

Exchange programs are ideal for:

  • In-state tuition students
  • Out-of-state students on WUE, tuition waivers, UM-specific scholarships
  • Students who would be happy at multiple universities or geographical locations and are okay if they might not be placed at top-choice university

Direct programs are ideal for:

  • Out-of-state students without tuition waivers or UM-specific scholarships
  • Students who wish to only be placed at their top-choice university or geographical location
