About English Language Institute (ELI)

Our History

Founded in 1993, the English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of Montana serves international students with limited English proficiency who wish to improve their English language and academic skills in order to study at UM, at another institution of higher education, or for professional training purposes. ELI is housed within the Global Engagement Office (GEO) and provides academic year and summer instruction, as well as tailored short-term English language training programs whose durations vary. Over the past 25 years, ELI has taught students from more than 44 countries, the majority of whom continue their studies in the UM system or other American universities.
