Activity Classes : Individual Sports

Students enrolling in courses taught at UM's Fitness and Recreation Center must present a Griz Card validating that the Campus Recreation Fee has been paid for that semester.

NOTE: For all ACTivity Classes: 

  1. There are additional Montana Board of Regents approved fees with courses that are noted with that course.  Please visit the detailed course information within Cyberbear for more information.  
  2. Grading Policy strictly enforced- classes missed prior to and after late registration count towards total absences allowed.
  3. Auditing of ACTivity Classes is not allowed

Jump Rope Fitness and Skill

  • Learn the sport of jump rope where one or more participants jump over a rope swung so that it passes under their feet and over their heads.
  • Acquire the knowledge of the multiple subsets of jump rope including: single freestyle, single speed, pairs, three person speed (double dutch), and three person freestyle (double dutch freestyle).

Fundamentals of Pocket Billiards

This course will cover the fundamentals of several billiard techniques. Curriculum includes an 8-Ball and 9-Ball tournament and thorough knowledge of rules. Instructors are fluent in all popular billiard games, strategies, history and equipment. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Provided by UC Game Room.

Intermediate Pocket Billiards
Offered as a course focused on improving your skills. Intermediate Billiards will cover the game of Billiards more in depth and offer more difficult games such as Straight Pool, trick shot knowledge, and snooker. This class will also give students the opportunity to play against more experienced players. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Provided by UC Game Room.

Handball

  • Learn the sport in which players use their hands to hit a small rubber ball against a wall such that their opponent cannot do the same without it touching the ground twice.
  • Learn four-wall, which can be played either by two players (singles), three players (cutthroat) or four players (doubles).

Martial Arts

  • Learn the codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a number of reasons: as self-defense, military and law enforcement applications, and mental and spiritual development.
  • Explore a variety of criteria, including:
    • Techniques taught: unarmed type of combat (grappling vs. striking; stand-up fighting vs. ground fighting)
    • By application or intent: self-defense, sport, choreography or demonstration of forms, physical fitness, meditation, etc.

Fundamentals of Golf

This course will cover the fundamentals of golf. Topics will include rules, terminology, etiquette, proper equipment use. Instruction on individual skills for grip, stance, and swing. Classes are held at the University of Montana Golf Course. Students must provide own transportation. Additional Golf Course Fee. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Limited clubs available.

Mountain Biking
Instruction in the principles of and how to be comfortable and confident riding a mountain bike off-road. Topics/Skills include: basics of mountain biking, understanding balance and agility of your bike, and basic repair and maintenance. Class will be held on-campus and at scheduled sites. Students provide own transportation. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Helmet!! No helmet, no riding! Bike in good working order. Comfortable riding shorts/tights and sneakers or riding shoes.

Fundamentals of Fly-Fishing
An introduction to Fly - Fishing. Students will be introduced to elements of the sport including: equipment, trout biology, reading water, casting proficiency and bug identification. Students will leave the class with the ability to: select appropriate gear for the spectrum of fly-fishing situations; defend against "salesmanship" when buying new gear; skills and confidence necessary to catch fish with a fly rod more consistently. Class will conclude with a day on the river. Graded Credit/No Credit. Requirements: Current fishing license or willingness to buy a short-term license for the river day. Equipment Needs: Personal gear if you have it.

Orienteering

  • Learn a group of sports that requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed.
  • Learn to combine significant navigation with a specific method of travel.

Folf

  • Learn the flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target, and is played using rules similar to golf.
  • Complete a hole by throwing a disc from a tee area toward a target, throwing again from the landing position of the disc until the target is reached.

Snow Bowl Ski Area

  • Learn alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, the sport or recreation of sliding down snow-covered hills on skis with fixed-heel bindings.
  • Learn snowboarding, a recreational activity and Olympic and Paralympic sport that involves descending a snow-covered slope while standing on a snowboard attached to a rider's feet.
  • Learn Telemark skiing, a skiing technique that combines elements of Alpine and Nordic skiing.

Racquetball
Introduce/review basic skills to beginning players. Instruction on rules and etiquette, proper equipment use, basic shots, serves, returns, and game strategies (singles, cutthroat, doubles). Class tournaments may be played. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Racquets, eye protection, balls provided.

Fundamentals of Table Tennis
This course will cover the fundamentals of table tennis. Topics will include terminology, serving techniques, knowledge of forehand and backhand drives, push, loop, block, flipping, smash, lob, etc. An in-class tournament will also be offered. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Provided by UC Game Room.

Intermediate Table Tennis
Offered as a course for players to enhance their skills. Instructors will cover strategies and playing with spin on the ball. This class will give students the opportunity to play against more experience players and will offer an in-class tournament. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Provided by UC Game Room.

Horse

  • Learn the skill of riding, driving, steeple-chasing or vaulting with horses.
  • Acquire the use of horses for practical working purposes, transportation, recreational activities, artistic or cultural exercises and competitive sport.

Fundamentals of Tennis
Introduce/review basic skills to beginning players; develop and enhance skills of intermediate and advanced players. Instruction on rules and etiquette, proper use of equipment, basic strokes, basic shots, serves, returns, game strategies (singles and doubles). Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Balls provided, limited number of racquets.

Physical Fitness

  • Perform aspects of sports, occupations and daily activities.
  • Perform moderate-vigorous physical exercise and sufficient rest.

Trampoline & Aerial Acrobatics
Learn or refine aerial acrobatic and tumbling skills on a variety of trampolines. Focus is on proper progressions and techniques. Strengthens and tones body, while increasing flexibility, agility, and spatial awareness. Class is designed for all skill levels. Held off campus at Bitterroot Gymnastics. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Appropriate Dress.

Mixed Martial Arts

  • Learn the sport that allows both striking and grappling, both standing and on the ground, using techniques from other sports and martial arts.
  • Incorporate multiple martial arts into an individual style

Swimming for Fitness

  • Learn the self-propulsion of a person through water, usually for recreation, sport, exercise, or survival.
  • Improve locomotion through coordinated movement of the limbs, the body, or both.

Fencing

  • Learn modern fencing: winning points are made through the contact with an opponent.
  • Learn the three forms of modern fencing, each uses a different kind of weapon and has different rules, this way the sport itself is divided into three competitive scenes: foil, épée, and sabre.

Archery

  • Learn the art, sport, practice or skill of using a bow to shoot arrows
  • Learn the skills of traditional archery, combined with the new scientific understanding
