Williams Family Builds Scholarship Endowment, Will Receive Blewett Matching Gift
The Williams family of Missoula has deep ties to the School of Law and the practice of law in Montana. Shelton R. Williams graduated with the Hon. James R. Browning in the class of 1941, his son Shelton C. "Mike" Williams followed in 1966 and Mike’s son, Mark, in 1992. Mark presently serves on the Board of Visitors and observed that his family "is very grateful for the education and opportunities the law school has provided us."
Shelton R. Williams had a long career in communities across western Montana until he passed away in Libby. His late wife Madge Cross Williams then endowed the Shelton R. Williams Memorial Fund to support a variety of academic activities, including student scholarships. The Williams family is now furthering that legacy with additional scholarship funds. "We appreciate that scholarships play a crucial role in the law school continuing to attract and keep outstanding students" said Mark Williams.
Prof. Greg Munro noted the small world of the Montana bar, "I actually took insurance law from Mike Williams, taught insurance law to Mark, and Mark has taught the course for me from time to time." Munro added, "The Williams family has been good friends to the law school for a very long time."
The new gifts from the Williams family will be matched by contributions from Zander and Andy Blewett into the new Access to Legal Education Scholarship. "We believe that giving begets other giving and we want to recognize others who give, by matching those gifts with our own," said Zander Blewett. The Blewetts have committed to matching scholarship gifts of $500 or more with their own gifts to the Access to Legal Education Scholarship Fund - a minimum match of $150,000 per year - up to a total of $1,500,000 over the next seven years.
"We appreciate what Greg Munro and the Blewetts have started and we want to contribute to ensuring that our alma mater has the resources to support its students and build on the tradition of excellence," added Williams. "We are excited about the future."

New Full-Tuition Scholarship Honors Sen. Lee Metcalf ('36)
Thanks to a gift from the Lee and Donna Metcalf Charitable Trust, a new generation of law students interested in pursuing a career in environmental law or related fields will have the opportunity to defray the cost of education with a renewable, full-year of paid in-state tuition and fees - approximately $12,500 - the first such full-tuition scholarship of its kind at the School. "Well before issues of natural resource conservation and environmental quality became fashionable, Lee was a leader in shaping national policies for these vital concerns. Lee was a proud product of the law school and would have been a believer in the Natural Resources and Environmental Law Program," said Helena attorney Peter "Mike" Meloy, a trustee of the Trust.

2Ls Wall, Laughlin Awarded MPILC Fellowship
2Ls Diana Wall and Luke Laughlin have been awarded the Montana Public Interest Law Coalition (MPILC) Summer 2015 Fellowship. Diana Wall is a future MPILC co-President, board member of the Western Montana Bar Association Pro Bono Committee, and volunteer with Montana Legal Services. Luke Laughlin is MPILC’s future 2L Rep, Outlaws member, and a board member of the Blue Mountain Clinic.

Hugh Victor Schaefer
Former University of Montana School of Law professor Hugh Victor Schaefer passed on May 29, 2015 with friends and family by his side.
Hugh enjoyed a distinguished legal career for more than 40 years. He was a professor at the University of Montana School of Law where he taught Business Organizations, Securities Regulation and Oil & Gas. Hugh was advisor to the Montana Law Review and coached the National Moot Court Team. At the time of his professorship, Martin Burke, Ed Eck, Peggy Tonon, Jeff Renz, and Interim Dean Greg Munro were students.
He was born October 24, 1933 in Ann Arbor, MI to Victor A. and Agnes Elaine Schaefer.
Hugh was a graduate of Notre Dame University, University of Tulsa Law School and had a graduate oil and gas fellowship at Southern Methodist University.
His dream was to be in the oil and gas business. That was accomplished in many forms from being an Asst. US Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma, Professor at Tulsa University Law School and University of Montana to corporate law practice with Marathon Oil Company to private law practice and culminating by being an arbitrator during his retirement.
Hugh is survived by the love of his life, Angela of Marana, AZ, to whom he was married 49 years; brothers Joseph L. (Mary) of Universal City, TX, and Michael of Indianapolis, IN; nieces and nephews; and his mother-in-law Rosemary Gates, Tulsa, OK.
